Has anyone figured out how to trick the new iPad Air into uploading audio files? I've got a Tascam DR40 for recording 'on the hoof' and an iPad Air (with Garage Band) for its lightness. Unfortunately the Tascam has a usb connection and the iPad Air the Apple lightening connector. I have bought the lightening camera cable and the lightening to SD card cable, but can't get either to work. Apple folks say ask Tascam…Tascam say ask Apple:rolleyes:
There must be a way to trick it, but I've not yet found the trick. Anyone here worked it out??

For things like this I use either a laptop of desktop (not sure if this in an option for you) and then use DropBox. I copy the file to a DropBox folder. I have the DropBox app on my iPad and just copy it from there.

How about some kind of cloud storage? Might be tedious to load large files.

I have network storage set up on my home network that I use to share files between all my tablets and laptops.

I used Seagate GoFlex Home. Bought it at Costco. It looks like it's called Seagate Central (http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/home-entertainment/media-sharing-devices/seagate-central/?cmpid=ppc-_-central-_-g-_-us-_-%2Bseagate%20%2Bgoflex%20home-_-b) now. It was very easy to set up, really just plug and play. There is an iOS app for it so the files on the network drive can be accessed.

One caveat is that I only use it to share music and video files, I'm not a home recordist so I don't know if ti would work for that or not.

Thanks for the advice guys. The problem is that I'm grabbing recordings in Rwanda and wanted to take my Ipad Air for lightness, rather than having to lug a computer around. The idea was to upload the recordings to the iPad, so I would have a backup. Trouble is the new iPad Air lightening connectors have been configured so that they will only upload pictures - they won't upload audio. I've tried both the camera cable and the SD card reader and neither work. Strange, given the iPad's popularity amongst musicians, that the iPad Air won't let you read and upload audio files.
I think I might have a solution now though - Kingston produce a WiFi drive with a built in SD card reader, I should be able to transfer the files by WiFi. Fingers crossed!

Not so sure about that. My ipad and iphones have lightning connectors and they transmit pictures, video, and audio.

That said, if you are using a 30 pin adapter then yes you do not get video. Just audio. That is true. You need a 30 pin native cable to get full transmission. and a lot of manufacturers of pre lightening gear either don't have those cables yet or are not making them.

Hello Chicago!
Which iPad are you using? The new iPad Air uses the 8 pin lightening, which I think is the problem. Also I'm trying to upload, not download (not that I really understand all this stuff!).

Using an ipad 4, and iphone 5, all with lightning.

That said I've not UPLOADED but I have synced.

Check out an app called iExplorer. It is for your computer not your ipad/phone. It lets you see and manipulate the storage on your phone/ipad. Might be useful. I've used it to copy a series of text messages from my phone and turn them into a PDF. Needed for evidence in a court case with a tenant.

Good luck.

On a side note Apogee wants $29 for a lightning cable for the Jam, plus $15 for shipping! Amazing!

Thanks - I'll check it out.
The prices for the lightening SD card reader and camera attachments are a bit steep too.

The Kingston WiFi drive has arrived and seems to do what I want. Not yet tried it with real audio files yet - just used a couple of short test files, but they seemed to work. Looks like I can read the SD cards from the Tascam DR40 on the WiFi unit and transfer them wirelessly both to the iPad and to a separate usb stick that you can also plug into the WiFi unit.
Will update in a few days when I've played about with it a bit.
