Hi all, I was browsing through the technical section of old and found a comment from Tom in 2003 on the relative size of low rise fret wire compared to other manufacturers with PRS being called out as a specific example.

"the 2 wires are the same size before installation. the .047 you're measuring is the fret after dressing and some wear. the smalls would be a big change in feel. we now have what we call low rise, which is .104x .047(undressed). this is the same size as what we used before the triangular heavy. also the same as what prs uses, but stainless."

I have been browsing the web at TAG's recently and have seen several contenders but have been put off by the low rise frets as all my TAG's are heavy frets. I am not precious about neck shapes or fret size but do prefer a happy medium or thicker and like the heavy frets and assume medium frets described as being as tall as heavy but not as wide would be fine.
However Tom's comment from years ago reads as though the low rise frets are comparable to PRS standard fret size which I have happily played over many years where in my own mind low rise would be vintage fender / gibson "fretless wonder" size.

Can anyone comment if my new found hope is true that low rise in TAG speak is not that low as this opens up a whole world for me and a world of hurt for my wallet

i've read it mentioned on-line that the prs wire is closest to 6150.

6150 is 104x47, just like tag's low rise.

i have an atom with low rise and i love it!

Indeed, low rise are the same sizes 6150. They are nothing like the fretless wonder or even the 70's era Gibson frets.

Thanks Tom and Kevin. My options just got a whole lot bigger :D

P.s. I hope NAMM is going well

I was enough lucky to play about 5-6 TAG's -all with low rise frets .
If one judge by name and by dimension he might get it wrong .
Low rises are fantastic frets , not small/short , not big/tall , not tiny , not too fat , but everything in between -meaning just right ! :D

I already have Jumbo's and heavies, so I think I know what to expect from TAG frets now

If I have to choose my frets again -it will be Jumbo for DT Floyd Rose guitars , heavy for Bulldogs and low rise for Strats and Tellies...
