About a month or so ago I posted a question regarding getting my SA / switcheroo equiped drop top classic to "quack" more in the traditional fender position 2 & 4 style.

First off, thanks to all for your sugguestions - they did help.

Three questions:

1. If I replace just the middle pickup w/ a VA would this enhance the quack I'm seeking?

2. Is this do-able with the switcheroo?

3. How would you wire it?

I REALLY miss that slight out of phaseness that my strats have. And I'm willing to endure the hum. That said, I love the SA in the front and the HD in the rear.

I look forward to your thoughts,

One thing that you might want to try, that worked for me (at least on the bridge/middle sound). The way Andersons come from the factory the bridge pickup split turns off the rear coil of the pickup. I turned the pickup around in the mounting ring on the Drop Top I had so that when split the rear coil (next to the bridge) is on. This made the spacing of the pickups on the bridge/middle combo (when tapped) more like on a Strat, which to me makes that position "quack" more like a Strat. The downside is that the bridge pickup tapped sound by itself is brighter. I don't find it to be any brighter than the bridge pickup on a Strat though. Try turning the bridge pickup around and see if it helps.

Great Sugguestion! I'll give it a whirl but I still want to know about compatability between sa's and va's and how do I wire this?

you can mix the two.

Hi,

I spoke with Roy this morning about your quack quest and he said: What about an SD1 or SD1- for the neck and mid positions? The SD1s are the same output as the SA1s but have a little less mids. The SD1-s are lower in output—more like the VA1s. Depending on how much of the illusive quack you are chasing the SD-series pickups could help and would still retain full Switcheroo function. If even more “quack” is needed then VAs could certainly be applied to the Switcheroo switching system. The down and up switching positions of the Switcheroo toggles would be the identical sound and the middle position would be off—basically just on & off function for VAs with Switcheroo.

Thanks Roy,

I've just purchased a used Va that I'm going to try in the middle. You are right on w/ the fact that the SA's are midrange heavy (or maybe they're just full freq and I'm used to less midrange). If this doesnt work I might give the SD's a try.

The VA will work very well, I’m sure.

Happy Fun,
