Hello there, I just joined the forum here because I recently stumbled
upon a guitar that I think falls into the area of expertise of some
folks I see posing here.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to shed light or send info my way on the Tele in the attached photos.
Any info would be really great!

thanks!

looks like a van nuys era schecter. i don't remember doing the 3 way with 3 knobs, but that was a long time ago.

Looks like an early '80s Schecter custom shop Tele.

Tom (Anderson) got the idea of using the two strap buttons from Dave Schecter while he was working there. The quality is too good to be a Dallas era, so I suspect it was made towards the end of the Van Nuys era, possibly while Tom was still working there.

I'm sure Tom will have more input.

Thanks a lot for the replies!
Tom, would you have been around when this thing was built? Any idea who the "Pat" is that signed the neck?
The two tone knobs are push-pull type pots that I haven't fully understood yet.

Could you tell me about these pickups? were the something you created? I've never seen anything like them in my life.

The guitar plays/sounds like a million bucks.
From running down the old Schecter parts numbers stamped in the wood I believe the body is solid Koa with a maple top. It is not a light-weight.

the pat would have been pat willkins who was painting back then. he is still in the guitar painting business. he still does the bowling ball finish for us when we get an order for one. we have two in the works right now.

yes, i would have been there. the pushpulls could be doing a couple different things. they could be splitters, or they could be series/parallel of the two pickups, or one could be a phase switch(my least favorite). my guess is that they are splitters.

those were made in response to the previous model that self destructed, the Z+. these pickups were bar magnet humbuckers. short coils like a traditional humbucker but with a bar in the center of the coils. ceramic magnet on the bottom. they were air coils, no bobbin, which was a very interesting construction style.

That is a good looking piece... send it this way if you tire of the weight~:) It looks like the neck, the signature and headstock didn't change much between 82 and the current California classic strat.

Again, that is an insane guitar/museum piece. I found a pic this morning of a similar one on the web.. albeit less pristine.

I am starting to think Tom should do a shout out to Van Nuys short run series maybe for Namm one year.. not that anyone wants to relive the past, but I think there is something to the aesthetic of the metal pick guards and brass hardware.

The one you found on the web may be less pristine, but it belonged to Pete Townshend and is selling for over $40,000.

Maybe they would trade me strait up because mine is in better shape??;)
