I've got a grosh with a medium roundback neck profile (0.830" - 0.930"). If I have read correctly, the '62 roundback profile has a taper of (0.830" - 0.955").

assuming a 1 5/8" nut width, is there a noticeable difference between these two profiles? I love the medium roundback profile on my retroclassic. I was used to the wizard neck on my '92 rg550 before, but getting used to this one (with a 10" radius) was no problem.

oh yeah, that's another question, will the difference in fingerboard radius yield a drastic difference in comfort between the two (10" .83-.93 vs 12-14" & .83 - .955)

thanks.

Look at it this way- if you play .009s, then the '62RB shape is thicker at the 12th fret by about the thickness of your D string, compared to the Grosh. I believe any noticeable difference would disappear once you spent some time with the guitar. The slightly flatter radius should allow for lower action and wider bending before fretting out (on paper, anyway).

If you were able to easily adjust from a Wizard neck to a Grosh med roundback, than this adjustment should be a piece of cake.

that's a good way to put it. it never occured to me that the difference is that small. the amount of time people spend discussing it made me think it's a huge difference....

I may be able to help some here. I have a Grosh Retro Classic with a med/lg roundback neck in 1 5/8. I've got a Cobra S with a 1 11/16 62 Roundback neck and just sold a Drop Top that had a 1 5/8 62 Roundback neck. In comparing the guitars I found the Anderson necks to have a little more taper, and the Grosh neck to be a little rounder on the back. To me the flatter fingerboard also makes the Anderson necks feel a little thinner from front to back.

The 1 5/8 62 Roundback neck on the Drop Top I had was a little too slim to be comfortable to me, but then My Grosh neck is the med/lg where yours is the med, so you should be fine. I actually prefer the 1 11/16 62 Roundback Anderson neck and find it to be closer the the med/lg Roundback Grosh neck, which is why I sold the Drop Top I had and ordered another one with the 1 11/16 neck.

One thing I found interesting: I have a friend who has a real 65 Strat that has been modified with a flatter fingerboard and big frets (yes he's a SRV fan <g>). The 1 5/8 62 Roundback neck on the Anderson I had was pretty much identical in taper and back shape to the old Fender.

that's helpful. just the name '62 roundback made me think it's like a baseball bat or something, when actually it's not too far off from what I'm already playing, which is pretty much perfect, as I have relatively small hands. and thus putting the specs on my dream anderson continue (it's already changed from the one I just posted a few days ago).

you know it's odd, cause the wizard neck on my old rg550 had a 1 11/16" width, but because it was so thin, it didn't feel that big. now when I got my grosh the strings did feel a bit unusual closer together (I had been playing the rg for about 7 years), but I got used to the new profile pretty quick and I love it.

Having owned Groshes with both medium and med/large roundback carves and Andersons with both 1 5/8 and 1 11/16 62 RB carves I can offer this.

1) Anderson 62 RB carves have more taper from the nut to the 12th fret than the Grosh RB carves.
2) Feelwise: 1 5/8 Andy 62 RB = 1 5/8 Grosh med RB. In my case, both are too small for my tastes.
1 11/16 Andy RB (adds +.020 to the depth) = 1 5/8 Grosh med/large RB.

.020 doesn't seem like much but you'd be amazed at the small differences our hands can detect. I'm like Stan. The 1 5/8 62 Roundback felt too thin to me but the 1 11/16 feels perfect. And because of the difference in radius and back feel the 1 11/16 62RB Anderson neck feels very similar to the 1 5/8 med/lg Grosh neck. I just wish I would have known that before I bought the Drop Top I had with the 1 5/8 neck.:(
