I'm using a 2008 Macbook with 4G of memory and a 320G HD. I installed Lion, and all is cool except my version of Photoshop Elements, (v4), is not compatible. Before I go get version 10, anyone have any alternative ideas?

What do you mainly use photoshop for? Just touching up/editing photos or graphics creation? Before buying PSE 10, take a look at Gimp (http://www.gimp.org) it's a great free alternative that has a lot of the same features.

We do some web stuff, but my wife generally handle that. I guess mostly for photo touch up, and a small bit of graphics.

I've been using Pixelmator of late and it's very snappy and easy to use. Does all the things you'd ever need to do for web / computer based photo manipulation. They've just released version 2 which makes it even more intuitive and adds many useful features.

That might do the trick. Looks like the UI is better than Gimp, and I really don't need all the bells and whistles. My wife uses the full Photoshop for all that. Geez half my photos these days come from my iPhone anyway!
Thanks!

It's also about 10 times faster than Gimp.

Agreed on both points, Pixelmator is a lot more mac-ish in UI, and if you don't need all the bells and whistles, it's great. There's definitely a steeper learning curve with GIMP but I think the feature set is closer to PSE. Plus it's free, you just have to deal with X11. ;)

Adobe Lightroom is good for just general Photo work. Doesn't have all the Photoshop tricks but has everything you need for photos.
