TAG has become really flexible since adding the Short stuff in the last year or two. It seems that almost anything you can imagine they will actually build now, except perhaps a 25.5"-scale anything with mahogany neck (I could be wrong...).

That is great to know. I wonder why no 25.5 mahogany neck?

originally it was to not muddy the waters about what a cobra was. but the other factor is that they just don't handle floyds that well, and floyds were a long scale only option. you can of course get a short scale floyd now, but still not on a mahogany neck. we are playing with a floyded sapele neck since it starts out harder than the mahogany we see these days.

Played it at the store thru a Fender Supersonic 22 1X12, played it at home thru my Bandmaster Reverb 2X10 combo. Here's what I think.

- The set up is great and I'm very particular about my set ups, action is good, intonation is good, was in tune close enough to play we took it out of the box, I didn't check the neck relief yet but it feels OK

- The fit and finish is flawless

- Played unplugged it's very resonant and sustains well (maybe some vibration from the tremolo springs, need to put a piece of foam in there and play it again)

- Plugged in it has a lot of girth, even in the kickback mode, sounds exactly the way Roy described it.

- The three way mini switch was a surpirse, my drop top classic only has a two way, kickback and full humbucker. I looked at the spec sheet and it says it also has VA boost, so I'm guessing three positions are kickback, kickback with VA boost and full humbucker? Full humbucker being the loudest and kickback alone being the quietest?

- Compared it to my Drop Top Classic (Maple on Alder, Mongrel is Maple on Mahogany and shorter scale) with the same pickups in the same pickup positions and in kickback and full humbucker mode with the same amp settings. The Mongrel is much fatter, Drop Top Classic is more twangy.

So it does what I wanted it to do, all is good today. First gig will be 10/2 and will need to cover everything from the 50's, all the way up this year. I think it will do it convincingly.

Here's the pics. I'm not a great photographer, the top has more figure in it than shows in the pictures.

switch works like this. it treats all pickups in any 5 way position.
up is kickback, always still hummfree.
middle normal pickups.
down is boost on.
don't forget about the pull tone pot when you have the neck pickup on. it's my fav rhythm tone.

Are you saying that you might have cobras and bulldogs and atoms with floyds and sapele necks? If so, how close to mahogany is sapele tone wise? Thanks.

Entandrophragma cylindricum, it is an african wood. darker in color and harder than honduran mahogany.

Thanks Tom. My wife likes it too. She generally doesn't express an opinion when I buy a new guitar or other gear, so that's significant.

uburoibob, pluto, Big Harry and Markus,

Thanks so much. It was worth the wait. Cherry Sunburst is my latest favorite color for a guitar, this one make 4 in that color.

I think its lighter than Honduran, and my guess is that its going to be bright, more along the lines of maple and swamp ash/koa families. I have heard good things about all sapeline acoustics, never having tried one, I don't think they take years to mature like old mahogany boxes which sometimes are dull and underwhelming (muddy). I bet that like sitka, sapelene will start with a bad rap till it actually goes into use and then people will say, "sweet." Pretty soon it will be featured on Somogyi's micro inlays...

all that i have seen is heavier than honduran, or at least heavier than the nice light stuff we get.
i think because it is seen as a less expensive alternative to genuine mahogany we have mostly seen it on lower end models, like the taylor 300 series. time will tell if it makes it's way to the upper end. the quartersawn stuff can be very beautiful as it gets some really nice ribbon grain.

Played it on the gig this weekend and I'm loving it. :) :D

It was an outdoor gig not mic'd so I was using my Egnater Renegade 1x12 combo. Played mostly classic country, some modern country and some classic rock.

It felt really good, was responsive, sustained well and the tone was exactly what I was looking for. Twangy enough to play country and fat enough for classic rock using the kickback switch as needed. On the modern country and classic rock tunes it transitioned into feed back very smoothly and pinch harmonics were a breeze. Double stops, cascading open string licks and country bends played "clean" were all clear and articulate.

Another guitar player there had a Flaxwood. I'd never seen one in person before, it was a very nice looking guitar. Semi hollow with P90's, a Flaxwood Liekki. I didn't get to play it but it sounded good.

Not as good as my Mongrel though.

gotta ask, How many of the guitars in the back are Anderson's.

I have the same burst on my Hollow T. Love it.

I have the same burst on my Hollow T. Love it.

I only have two Andersons, the two pictured. The rest of the guitars are various brands, partscasters, Fender, G&L, Ibanez, PRS. No Gibsons however, never got along with them for some reason.

Yes, Cherry Burst is a great color, like it a lot myself. I think in total I have 5 Cherry Burst guitars.
