Well, much has been happening for me lately - lots of churn in my backline, but this is especially noteworthy.
I now have a Katrina with a matching semi-open back 1x10x1x12 cabinet with Jensen Neo's in it. No amp is perfect, but let's just say this amp is tickling lots of buttons right now. I've actually gone back an re-recorded a bunch of my rhythm tracks on my forthcoming record (not the right term - download? Album still works...) because it is so much more satisfying than the other combination of stuff. Notice I didn't say "better" - the Bogners and Bad Cats and Divided by's, and even vintage Fenders sounded great, but they just missed something. And I didn't really know that I was missing it until I sat in front of a Katrina.
Anyway, this is a 40ish watt EL34 amp, 2 channels, with reverb. It is a unique design and doesn't sound like a fender/vox/marshall/matchless. It has some features of those amps, but is definitely its own thing. It could easily turn into a signature for someone (ME?)
The channels are independent - Channel 1 has more gain, but isn't super "gainy" - not a metal amp, but can definitely do Rawk with a pedal and an LP. This channel basically goes from a dry, swampy clean with amazing warmth and instant attack (which keeps the notes nice and separated) to a rocking, pissed of Neil Young. Furry, stinky, slightly out of control. In between you get this killer breakup that works for funk, indie etc. Great channel.
Channel 2 is a bouncy number. Still voiced on the swampy side, but with more of an open ended, chimey character - somewhat like a vox with some brownface/tweed in there. This is really not a blackface sounding amp. Great clean with the same note definition, and sounds awesome with strats, teles, cobras, LPs etc. The sound is big and doesn't get smaller as the volume goes up.
The amp has a very cool power dampener built in that lets you cook the tubes with controllable volume. Mine has 2 loops in it it, and you can mix the channels together with a little knob on the back.
Recording with it is a dream - a couple of knob turns, pick the right guitar, and bang, instant take. I can't wait to play out live with it. This won't be my only Cat5, I think.
Take look at Cat5 if you're in the market, and tell Don I sent you!
