:)

...that's new puppy day. Yellow Lab.

Picked this little girl from a litter of 10 - she was the runt. We'll be bringing her home on Friday (guitars are in their cases...closet door is closed...). ;)

This is Bailey:

We're psyched - should be a fun (well...) weekend. Not planning on a whole lot of sleep the first couple / few nites.

Here's our Bailey, who is now an 11 week old Hovawart!
Congratulations to you!!!

Tom, I did a double take when I realized that Bailey & Friend were actually sitting on the love seat. Many folks won't let their animals "sit" on the furniture, but these two are clearly willing to follow their humans' lead! I'm impressed.

Oh, and for Bailey #1 in this series, I hope you'll consider the crating option for training. I balked with my latest but the breeder convinced me...and it was a wonderful thing for Barney and the family. Tibetan Terriers are really hard to house-break but over the first year I think he had two "accidents," both times because I wasn't paying attention.

And no, my wife didn't smack me with a newspaper on either occasion.

Congrats on the new Yellow Lab Pup...and the other pups, for that matter.

I'll agree with the suggestion about crating. I've owned many Labs over the years, and they love the crate. My current chocolate, "Angus", is 6 and still goes in his crate for some peace and quiet, of his own accord.

I know you are good with "wood working", Tom. I'd say all you need to do is knock out that wall behind your dogs' seat, and build your dog crate addition.

Imagine trying to explain that to the Mrs.!!

Maybe the dogs might guide you to the loo??? :)

I'm by far not an animal lover but my wife and kids are crazy about all animals. Here's our newest edition that we just bought today (wow, I forgot how hard potty training was!!):

These two are 4 years old now. A pair of wirehair dachshunds named Harry and Ginny (she's the blonde).

Tom, what kind of dogs are yours? They look to be large sight hounds, like Irish Wolfhounds or Scottish Deerhounds... I had a couple of Borzois back in the 70s...

They are Irish wolfhounds. We have rescued z couple over the past 15 years and 4 years ago we got these two as puppies. They are litter mates and are pretty much inseparable .

I love those Irish Wolfies.

I had a friend with one, and a neighbor with two.

Ironically, they do just fine in pretty small houses... go figure... We had a neighbor with two in an impossibly small townhome.

My buddy's would jump up to give you a hug, put his paws on your shoulder... and... look DOWN at you...

awesome and sweet dogs.

Wow! Great dogs guys!!! Tom - it's been years since I've seen pics of your Wolfies...what a pair - they are huge! I grew up down the street from one, and it looked just so big when I was a little kid.

Bailey is a real biter - just wants to chew on everything. We just gotta watch her every move. She only peed a couple of times and that was when she was sleeping on the floor and got up w/o my knowing. We are using a crate (mostly for sleeping) as we did with our basset - got a great big one with a divider so we can increase the size as the bones (and teeth) get bigger!

When did puppies teeth become so sharp? :p

Just getting her accustomed to the new surroundings, trying to introduce the leash, and some basic commands. We're going to take her (and ourselves!) to a professional trainer after she gets caught up with her vaccinations. We would love to get her therapy-trained, as my wife visits a lot of sick and elderly folks.

Here was our 'unbashful' pup sleeping last Sunday. She had that blue bone in her mouth right up to when I took the pic:

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m137/tmihm/pup/f4468ad9.jpg

I've found it impossible to practice since we got her. I'm sure that will change as time goes on, I just don't want to crate her while I'm standing there playing. Not to mention what she'll think when I play the guitar for the 1st time around her (cool that dogs can't boo or yell 'Freebird'). Played some Steely Dan for her over the weekend and she seemed to be good with it. ;) Oh, and she's fond of sitting in front of the mirror and looking at herself. She lays down and puts her nore up against it.

More to come on Bailey!

Penny has been with us now for just less than a year... she's also the runt of her litter (she's just over 1 and weighs 55 lbs). It's been fun to watch her and our daughter grow up together - though I'm not sure which are more work! Babies may require more care, but puppies are instantly mobile - and those teeth!

Wow, I've seen some big Danes, but even that one gives me chills. Mine topped out at about 150 pounds. The owner could have a second career selling compost I'm sure. Wondering how the dog's health is, they tend to have hip and heart problems and all that extra weight can't be good. Beautiful dog though.

Hi Pluto,
Because they need love , attention and time spent wit them !
Contrary , people usually think such a "dangerous animal " cannot have baby girl character , and this is where problem arises.
A good friend of mine used to have a male Rotty , Rocky was the name .
Looking for job and the new life, my friend take the dog with him from South Africa to Argentina , then from Argentina to Spain, from Spain to Yugoslavia .
He simply couldn't leave the dog behind .
Than, he get short of money , because every trip cost him about $2,000 or more just for the dog transport .
He decided to leave the dog in Montenegro with his family and get back to SA , with intention to get him back once he make some money .
After 30 or 40 days , dog starved to death , because he refused to take almost any food since his owner leave him behind.

That was 20 years ago , but still today ,my friend get wet eyes when talking about Rocky ...

Sad story , but that's how things work sometimes with man's best friend .

That's great! Tom, I think you need to get a saddle for that one! Is that a handful of fur he's holding?? Priceless.

Yup, Finn is a very patient boy. The kids can do just about anything to him.

Love seeing these dog pictures! Briggs, that's one cool puppy.

Last week I had a dog rich environment. My son and three grandchildren visited and brought Gunner, a golden retriever (very nice dog). In all 3 adults, 3 tiny people, 3 dogs, and 3 cats in a 1000 sq ft house. It was a great visit, but I was really looking forward to some silence. Now that I have it, it is kind of boring.

Anyway, I did notice that these 3 dogs seemed to have no concept of size. At least my 2 poms didn't. They ruled most of the time. I didn't see the cats much that week.

That's awesome dplight. We introduced the puppy (Hallie) to the two cats, one of the cats is not too bright and just kind of oblivious that anything new is in the house, the other cat still rules the roost. Right now Hallie is scared of the cat, we'll see how it goes once she gets about 40-something pounds…
