Other than looks, what is the main sonic difference between these two? or even H2+ vs. HF2/HC2?...different magnets?...obviously smaller pole pieces

actually everything is different. wire gauge and insulation, poles, magnet material and orientation.
the H2+ has a broader frequency range in both directions.

Will an 'H' series pickup retro-fit where are an 'HF' series pickup is?

Awesome..thanks Tom...so if an HF2 doesn't have enough output and cut I'm looking for and is a little too loose on the bass, almost too mellow over-all, in a DT Quilt/Alder w/ rosewood....get a ____?

H2+ or because you want more cut and tight bottom, HN3.
