View Full Version : Single coil noise

I have an HTC with an M1, VA1 and TV3. The single coil noise is finally getting to me and my bandmates. There are tube lights in the practice and I can blame them on some of the noise. In HB mode, the guitar is dead silent, but in SC modes it's too noisy. I'm a big fan of being able to mix sc and hb tones and this TA is my keeper.
Short of finding a new rehearsal hall, are there any ways I can reduce the SC noise? Thanks

Nope. Not really.
But you can lesson the impact quite a bit.
Here is what I do:
Tuner mute between songs.
I use a clean amp, so I do not turn on any OD/Dist until I absolutely have to. I really do not get much noise unless I am playing with an overdriven sound.
Lower the guitar volume or use a volume pedal until you need to be in the mix.
Or stand inside a big lead pipe. (this last part was my lame attempt at a joke...)
your volume control is your best friend. if you're not playing it should be off. you would not believe the number of calls and emails i get saying "my guitar hums when i let go of the strings with my overdrive pedal on, what's wrong with my guitar?" if you're not grounded to your guitar(touching something metal) you are an antenna for all the stuff that's in the air. it's like riding a bike, when you stop you need to put your foot down or you will fall over.
changing pickups is always an option but will sound different, maybe not better or worse, but different.

thanks,
I definitely do not want to swap pickups. Vol control and tuner mute are what I do now. The tube lights make the noise worse at the rehearsal hall. The noise wasn't bad at sunday's gig. House lights didn't create all the interference.
My Comp 66 might be part of the problem too. It started acting up with some noise issues about a month ago. solving little problems like these make guitar playing more interesting.
Comps often are one of the potentially noisier pieces in the chain.
