View Full Version : Thinking of TAG pickup in PRS
Hi everyone. I have a PRS Custom 24 that I play a lot (basically play a lot as far as non-Andersons goes hehe) and I'm looking into getting a new bridge pickup. I have a DiMarzio D Sonic in the bridge right now. I had replaced the original HFS (Hot Fat Screams) PRS pickup for the D Sonic because the HFS was way too fat sounding, almost imbalanced to my ears. The D Sonic gave a more balanced, flatter EQ response which worked well at the time.
Now I play my Cobra S a bunch as well as my Drop Top 7 and they just sound way more vibrant and my PRS sounds really dark and somewhat dull. Thinking that I should put another high gain pup in the bridge but one that can pull out some sparkle in the highs and brighten it up a bit. I use a heavier string gauge and tune this guitar down to Drop C so the pickup has to be able to have some definition. Thinking about putting an Anderson pickup in it.
What would you guys recommend? H2+, HN2+, something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hey Cody. I love my Classic with the H2+ and my Drop Top with H3+. Both pickups are great. The H2+ is the best balanced pickup for high gain. Sounds open and really shows the nuances of the body wood (alder). I really like that pickup. The H3+ sounds a bit hotter and more compressed. I really like it for my high gain chugging. Leads just soar!
Here are some examples through my amp:

I read on Rig Talk about a guy who LOVES the H2+ in his CU22.
Might be worth popping over there and having a look... I think the thread is entitled Anderson or Suhr . :D

Haha nice! I've noticed you're a pretty big fan of that pup :)

Super cool vids, man! They all sound really cool. Both pups sound great. I think the H2+ might be something to look into, so long as it has enough output, which I think it does.

Thanks wolf! I'll go check it out & see what they're saying. My initial thought was that a H2+ would be the ticket but I just wanna research it as much as I can.

Tonebum (new member on the forum) had been fighting to get the sound he wanted from his Custom 24 and he put an HC2 in the bridge and I believe he loves it.
Great pickup that HC2!

Interesting. I hadn't given the HC's much thought. That could be a pretty cool combo. Thanks :)

I actually have HC3's in two of my Andersons! Great pu as well! Even though I still like the HN3+ a tiny bit better. You can actually hear the HC3 on our album... 1st song "Falling Away" was recorded with a Mahogany/Maple Drop Top with an HC3 whereas the rest was recorded with an Alder Classic loaded with an HN3+...

Thats my favorite song on the album, glad to know that because I have been considering putting an HC3 in my CT.

As much of an unabashed TAG-fan-boy as I am... I have to say that after getting my Standard 24 with the HFS and Bass pickups, I do wonder why people ever replace these. They are just WONDERFUL in this guitar. I've owned guitars where I wish I had different pickups, and I've put Tom's pickups in other guitars before, but this PRS ain't one of them by any shot.

I've had the DiMarzio D Sonic in there for the past 5 years so I actually kinda took your advice & decided to pop the HFS back in....
Man, that is a really cool sounding pickup! I forgot how cool it is. It wasn't the exact tone I was going for in my head but it just sounds way cool in its own right! Only problem is that I'm an amateur tech so I soldered/installed myself on the 5 way rotary switch (which I don't like; only thing that sucks about the guitar) & I think I didn't isolate the grounds or something because the pickup shorts out every once in a while  I really need to get better at these basic tech things...
Either way, thanks Pietro!
