View Full Version : Pedalboard pedal order question

Probably a kindergarten question, but I've only started using a pedalboard in the last 3-6 months.
I'm a little confused about the order of my pedals on my pedalboard and was hoping I could get some advice from the forum. I'm not having any problems, per se, just want to give it the best shot to sound good.
Right now I have my guitar line into - turbo tuner - suhr kokoboost - MI audio blue boy deluxe - BBE zen wah - DD-7 delay - NS2 noise suppressor - into guitar input for either Crate 2X12 50 watt or electradyne. (no FX loop)
I only use the DD-7 on clean sounds - always off on distortion.
Also considering putting a Pro Rat pedal in there somewhere.
I was told that the Wah should go right after the tuner. Also was suggested that the NS-2 go before boost/delays but always thought it should go at the end of the line to "clean up" any extra noise.????
All suggestions for proper sequence would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
simple rule i follow is wah, comp, gain pedals, highest first, boost, any modulation, delay, amp.
since having the m9, i've been playing with moving some of the odd stuff around, like trem after delay.

You've probably heard this said before, but there really is no "right" way to do it. Experiment and find whatever works for you. :)
But, having said that, I understand you are asking for advice, so her is my take.
Guitar > tuner > wah > NS2 w/ MI BBD, Rat & Suhr boost in the loop> DD-7 > amp
Have fun!

Really appreciate it Ray K. This should give me a great jumping off point.
I'll try that. Never put anything in an FX loop so I'll probably try straight into amp 1st then run through FX loop with those effects and see what sounds best.
My fear of the FX loop I think is just so many cables! My board is already like a plate of spaghetti!!

You can easily make a snake with either three cables or better yet, LAVA or George L. All you need is the cables, some colored electrical tape to identify the send and returns, and some heat shrink tubing.
Your echos and choruses will sound SO MUCH better (IMHO) going through the loop.

Ray, why would you put an OD/Dist and boost in the loop? Usually we just put things like delay and chorus/flange into the loop. Just wondering, that is all. Maybe you are on to a secret?
i was a bit concerned about my boost before the m9, so i moved it to after it and didn't hear a change. i guess the m9 can handle a hot input.
maybe if ray wants the boost to be clean and not hit the amp any harder it would do good in the loop. curious about the rat in the loop.
So I should put my Delay, Flanger, Chorus and Shifter, in the Effects loop? Does it matter if it is Parallel or Series? The FX loop that is?
series loop is easier. then the effects would get set the same as on the pedalboard. if it's a parallel loop. you need to set them at full wet but then you still have unaffected guitar mixed in.

My board is:
Volume -> Tuner out
Wah
Comp
Delay
Chorus
OD 1
OD 2
Boost
Took me some experimentation to settle on this order, tried them all kinds of different orders for a long time. Never cared for anything in the FX loop.

Mine is:
Guitar to Pedal Board Patch Bay -->Turbo Tuner --> Clyde Deluxe Wah -->Tone Press Compressor --> RC Boost -->Looper with five OD/Dist --> Patch Bay-->Dr Z Maz 18 Amp
Return from Maz 18 FX Send--> Patch Bay -->Looper with Choral Flange and Nova Delay --> Patch Bay --> Maz 18 Return and Maz 38 Return
i think we need a pic of that dano.

How's this? Trying to figure a way to squeeze an EP boost in there.

looks like plenty room above the wah.

Sorry I haven't been able to check in lately, guys.
What I was referring to about putting any gain pedals in a loop was specific to the Boss NS-2. The pedal itself has an effects loop. So that's where my gain pedals go.
Currently I don't have any amps with effects loops, but that is certainly where any time based effects could go if needed.
Hope I didn't confuse too much. :o
Thanks,
Ray K.
