I recently picked up a bogner 2x12 closed back cab thinking closed back is the way to go since I'm primarily a rock player. But a friend of mine with similar taste in music told me he uses the open back version and he likes it much better. Luckily I can get an open panel from bogner and switch it if I choose to do so. I know its a matter of taste, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thanks

I've only played open back for the last 20 years or so. Not sure why other than I like the sound a bit more. it is a bit woolier and less focused. Here is a nice couple of articles:

I have the same cabinet (over-sized Bogner 2 x 12) that I use with my Shiva.
While the closed-back sound is tighter and more 4 x12 sounding, I had Jeff Swanson of Swanson Cabinets make it a 3/4 back for me. I can always put the 1/4 panel back it if I need to. I like the extra air I get from having the back slightly open. That and I replaced one of the V30's with a G12H.
Jeff did a stellar job, as usual and it was inexpensive. Not sure what Bogner charges.
