So I have decided there are a few guitars that are made to be played and if a ding happens, it happens. But then there are a few I have hanging up in my studio that don't really leave the house. I was moving a guitar stand today, and it banged into my Taylor 912 and left a little mark on the top. I just hate when that stuff happens... especially when it was my own fault.

I guess no sense in losing too much sleep when what's done is done... you guys ever have these things happen??

The first ding is the hardest.

This is very true. It wasn't a first... just another in this case.

Yes it sucks!

My DTC was two days old, and I was putting it in the case. I accidentally dropped the whammy bar on the guitar. Little ding, not through the paint. But it did break my heart.

I had just gotten my Hollow Short T about 6 weeks earlier. I was doing a live concert recording and somehow while mics were getting run, a ding mysteriously appeared in the top of my guitar. I didn't wanna screw up the show going on a witch hunt, but I was bummed fer sure. Of all the guitars I've owned, I've only dinged or scratched them a couple of times. I get bummed, but I was twice as bummed that I didn't even do this one myself.

I had just got my TA droptop T guitar of the week. I was setting up on stage and during a the soundcheck, I was playing my crowdster and the bass player dancing around on stage knocked it over putting a dent in the neck. Both he and I was sick. He said he was sorry. I used to play a lot of pool and when I would get a knick in one of my cues, I would put a small drop of water on the nick and it would dry and I would take some steel wool and smooth it out. Worked like a charm on my guitar, all is good.:D

I'm terrified of guitar cables. Had a LP in the past for only 2 days before dinging it. I was picking up a guitar cord in my home studio and the end whipped around smacked the top with 2 indentations. Saw them every time I played that darn guitar. This has happened before. I'm a slow learner.

Dings are fixable. I'm not sure about he newer finishes, but you'd be amazed at what an experienced guy can do to get huge dings out of nitro finishes.

Call Taylor if you want it fixed. They can do it................You'll never know that there was a ding there.

the best story I have is of my friends guitar. While at church he had set his guitar flat on the floor while we were setting up and there were a group of kids in there playing with some beach balls. One of the balls hit a mic stand and the mic went face first onto the spruce. This wasnt a ding it was broken wood. Very sad day. My friend put his bands sticker over it so no one would know it was there.

The first boutique guitar I bought was a beautiful flamed Pensa Suhr Mark Knopfler model guitar. I learned, the hard way, that there's a special tool for grabbing the trem springs when you wanna change one. And, you really oughta have that tool. Yep, my pliers slipped off the spring and put a 2-inch gash in the back. Ouch! Still hurts to think about it.

My Crowdster... let's just say that if I ever sell it (which is highly unlikely as it has mondo sentimental value now), it won't be "miny-ey". Small things everywhere, but the first really significant one happened recently. Not on the top and it still looks brand new at first glance, so I'm cool with it.

Used to have a danelectro I didn't care about getting dings on, and for some reason, no matter how rough I handled it, it never got one single ding... go figure... on the 200-dollar guitar...

I have a CS NOS 60's Strat that is ALL BANGED UP...

See I borrowed it from a friend to use at an outdoor gig. Now all my guitars have Straploks on them. This one did not...

So at the beginning of the second set, I had not properly put the strap on, and the guitar slipped off onto the concrete. Mind you this guitar was virtually unplayed when I borrowed it. It sustained numerous chips and dings, but was structurally fine.

So I had to return it to him all beat up. I offered to buy the guitar from him, pay for repair, or just give him money to compensate for the damage. His choice. He was REALLY gracious, asked if I liked how the guitar played and felt. I did really like it, so I bought it. He and I jokingly call it the "Danno Relic!"

But having to go to his house and show him how I beat up his pristine Strat sucked! :o

My 2003 drop top was a week or two old when it fell victim to the spring loaded capo. My fingers slipped off the capo while I was removing from the neck. It launched and bounced off the quilt top of course. Tiny ding, but I remember well. That's still the only ding in the top anyway.

Best thing to do is to intentionally ding it as soon as you get home. I did that with my new car. Took a ball peen hammer and whacked it a good one right away. Gets it over with. ;)

Finally, a post in this thread I can smile about...

In April, my band played a weeklong gig at Club Med Ixtapa, MX. Given the travel logistics and limitations, I can only take one guitar. I took a gorgeous quilt maple topped Bora Bora blue TAG hollow T. It is my "mexico" guitar because (1) it is H-S-H with tremolo and powerbridge, making it an ultimate "swiss army knife" and (2) it looks like the ocean.

On the fourth night, after we played, I put the guitar back in the gig bag. When I went to pick it up to go back to my room, I didn't know that the zipper had completely broken. I picked up the case by the "hanger hook" and the guitar slid right out, face down onto the pavement. Gasp!

The guitar took a chip about the size of a silver dollar right on the top, above the bridge, kind of where my arm rests. All the finish came off down to the wood, but no dent in the wood. And, it is right where my arm would perspire and continue to flake off finish.

Fortunately, Benny Rodriguez has his shop near my office. Double fortunately, my PAF insurance covers the damage. So, Benny says he is trying to get some paint and UV finish from Tom and thinks he can do some "damage control." He's got my guitar, and my insurance company already paid me based on Benny's quote.

So, I took a body blow, but I am hoping to be up for the next round.
