I'm having a minor problem with my first string and wondering if maybe someone can give me a hint as to what to look at. When I play the string open it sounds like it's vibrating against something, kind of Sitar like. When I fret the string it sounds normal. Any ideas?

I have a bit of a problem like that with the High-E on my US Masters (which has NO string tree!), but it doesn't show up through the amp at all, so I don't worry about it.
Is it ringing through the amp?
check for debris in the not slot. number one cause if it's something that just showed up.

I cleaned out the nut slot and the problem is solved, thanks everyone.
Another thing. I notice sometimes when I touch the pick guard, when I'm playing or between songs, that sometimes I hear a sound like static electricity thru my amp. Any ideas anyone?
we hear this a lot in the winter when forced air heat is everywhere. the dryness promotes static electricity. sometimes a dryer sheet wipe will solve it. we've been doing some extra shielding on pickguards these days and it also sometimes helps.
