ever, never? i seldom say never(as supported by some recent offerings and another you have not seen yet). but i don't have any short term plans for doing laminated headstocks.

f-holes would be cool...

Just... please... no more of those hockey stick headstocks.

and no 12-strings please (6 too many)

I think a short strat would be marketable, though. Kinda like the sister to the short T.

But me? Not in the market. Played my two Andys for Christmas eve rehearsal last night. If all the other guitars burned up I'd be okay.

so, what details are important for this f hole guitar? do you really want it to sound like a 335 or are you lookingfor something more open sounding than that?

I would prefer that it sound like an Anderson. Your interpretation of what a hollow body would sound like.

It's sonic signature I'm sure would be great, but I would like the option of a bigsby, now that would be cool as well....f holes and and a bigsby.

OK, since everyone is giving their Christmas wish and it's not even Christmas, here's mine. How about a carved maple tops? Still quilted/flamed/tubular maple, but arched top over the solid mahogany body of a cobra.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good solo.

Personally I really enjoy the "warm fuzzy" aspects that the semihollow 335 has. It can get muddy, and that would be the thing I'd like to see "improved upon". Whether via pickup choice/design, or perhaps utilizing a slightly smaller body, I wonder if the warm and fuzziness can be preserved, but tighten up the tone in order to lessing the tendency for muddyness.

I've noticed that some humbucking pickups can have the warmth but maintain the ability to hear each note you fret, and also the sound "stays open" allowing all the notes you play to be heard. So, perhaps a combination of body size and design, along with a warm but "clear" humbucking pu might do the trick.

One of the main things I drool over is the idea of a semihollow with an Anderson neck. THAT'S GONNA BE SPECIAL.

And, thanks for asking, Tom!!

one that makes me sound like Larry Carlton?

I have to say, as much as I like F-holes... I'm not convinced I'd ever want a TAG with them. Arched top and back? Been there, done. I have a Godin like that and I don't need another, and don't play that much...

Tele thinline vibe? I think I have to be honest, and say I probably prefer the closed hollow sound of my Hollow Cobra.

Hollow Atom with f-holes? hmmm... I can't afford it, not for a long time, so don't add my name to the list... Not today.

A couple more ideas;

The 335 or Thinline types that I've encountered seemed to benefit from having thick necks. I think that may help with added sustain, and keeping the tone bigger and perhaps warmer as well.

Personally, I've wondered if a set neck is preferable in a "f hole" guitar. I lean in this direction, but don't know if you've ever done set neck guitars, Tom. That said, I have a Fender Custom Shop Tele Thinline with a screw on neck that has tone to die for. It's neck, btw, is very thick, and maple.

I'd love to see a semihollow body that was larger than most Anderson bodies, although I don't think it'd have to be as large as a 335. I could easily see something like an Atom CT as a semi hollow body. THAT would rock!!

Personally, I've wondered if a set neck is preferable in a "f hole" guitar.

Used to think that, having owned two heritages and a Gibson over the years, but my Godin convinced me. bolt-neck, f-hole goodness. Every time I try and sell this, I end up keeping it... again... I might put a set of P-Rails in it next year just for fun, although the stock Godin pickups are actually really great... in fact, I think I might play this some this weekend!

Pietro, are you happy with those 'traditional' looking f-holes on the Godin, or would something cut a bit more modern have suited it better? I just have this nagging doubt at the back of my mid about the aesthetics of f-holes on LP and Tele style bodies.

Really? Check out a Fender Thinline. It is essentially a hollow Tele. Or the Gibson 339, which is about the size of a LP double cutaway. I had both for a while. Sound was good. I actually liked the Thinline better. It was more unique sounding. For me I'd rather play my 335, or Hollow I than the 339. Still, I just did not like the necks or quality of either.

Anyway, we are all speculating. I am sure that whatever TA comes up with, F Holes, a short Classic, an on-board Reostat Defrangulator, it will be awesome!

I'm a regular f-hole guy. No wacky stuff for me. Something amazingly old-world and classy about them. But that's me.

WOW! That would be cool... but only if it's true bypass.

I realise this is a very subjective, personal, thing but to me f-holes seem to look better on the more symetrical shaped bodies like the 335 and 339.

What about the gibson es336? Nice compromise mid-level size between the 335 and an LP?

i've had to put this aside for a bit to finish something that roy, the guys, and too many customers were asking for. i'll be back on the hollow guitar after namm.

not really. we're just doing the first real batch of bulldogs then the 7 strings, so i've got a months worth of work on those left. i'm still playing my hollow bigsby loaded ct and loving it. we'll probably end up with a 14" wide body on a hollow guitar, but the 13"ct is pretty darn comfy.

But hearing about the progress on the 7 strings is exciting!!! I had dinner with Ed last night and we couldn't stop talking about how awesome they're going to be. :D
Thanks so much again for making them happen, Tom!!!

One more question, Tom...
Did you come to a conclusion yet on which Floyd to use on the 7 strings? I remember you mentioning that the first 7 strings used a low profile Floyd...

tom
02-19-2010, 11:43 AM
the first ones used a low profile clone. these will have original floyd 7's. still debating on the vintage style trem. there are only two choices.
