neck and fret issues aside, I'm wondering if a fixed bridge will allow for lower action (without buzzing) than a tremelo. This seems to be my experience but I haven't exactly run an exhaustive comparison. Any ideas?
wouldn't make a difference.
i think the one thing that people don't take into account if fret height. it can greatly affect the feel of action height. height of the string off the fret is what we and other set to. you play off the top of the fret. if the strings are 1/16" off the top of tall frets, the action will "feel" higher than the same 1/16" off of lower frets.

This is exactly why I love "low rise" frets.

Interesting. I'm the opposite. I love Jumbo frets with the lowest possible action. For me it provides all of the benefits of a low action and I can still "grab" the string and push it around.
that's why we do both.
I KNEW there was a reason...............:D

Can you guys tell me what the dimensions of the "low-rise" fretwire that TAG uses?

I can not have a grip ( "grab" ) with low rise frets/ low action .
Such a guitar is unplayable for me.
In that case only solution is to make it with high action .
Another solution : put in Jumbo SS frets in , and problem is solved .
I can have low action , but still lots of grip/grab :)
Ideal !
That's exactly what I did with my old hand made guitar which used to have low rise frets .
(That was actually an exercise before I made decision about my TAG specs. Experiment was 100% successful , so my new TAG will have it . )
Now , She is equipped with Jescar SS Jumbo's ,and it is the most playable neck I ever owned , played or touched up to date !
So don't be scared with Jumbo railway size and look, , give it a try .
By the way , no intonation problems , only unbelievably easy vibrato and bend , fallowing by silky-sh feeling of effortless flying over the neck.
Back to original question , IMHO , we can not put frets issues aside , so for for the lowest possible action , but still playable ,you'll need Jumbo's or similar frets size .

I find the Anderson Mediums to be the perfect compromise. You can still push the strings around, but there is less of that slightly out of tune sound if you press too hard on a string.
