Besides the obvious benefits of calling TAG and speaking to Roy, I think I'm in a pretty good position to answer this one. I have the following humbuckers either in a guitar or in a drawer: HC2, HF1+, H2+, H3, HW2, HO2, HO1+, HO1-, H3, HN2+.

My absolute favourite is the HC2 in my Hollow Cobra S for both clean and distorted sounds, it has that vintage vibe thing going on. The HF1+ was a close second, but I felt it was getting a little swamped by the M1s in the neck and middle.

In my Drop Top w/ Floyd, I'm having trouble beating the H3. But, the HN2+ does quite well there and so do the H2+ and HW2. The HOs and HF/HC were a little too 'vintage' sounding for the 80's sound that I like this guitar for - they sounded great, but I have the Hollow Cobra S for the vintage stuff. The HW2 is on the border of vintage, but still has quite a good modern character to its tone.

The H2+ is truly a great all-rounder. It's a little brighter IMO than the H3, and also provides a nice 'full bandwidth' clean sound. These are two pickups that I'd recommend if you want a modern sound from the guitar.

However, from the description of what you're after, I'd suggest an HF2 or HC2, or may even an HF1+/HC1+. These are in my opinion Tom's 'piece de resistance' of full size humbucking pickups. They do the vintage sound quite well, without sounding like you're plugging in through an AM radio. They also have a very nice top end sparkle ... better described as zhingyness. :)
