Ideas now that Manny's is closed ???
In terms of "guitar" stores on 48th St., I don't believe there's many left. I used to work at Right Track Studios right there on 48th in it's heyday but that was a long time ago...I assume Rudy's is still there but besides Sam Ash, that's probably it. It's a shame.....

Emil,
Sorry about your Dad. We'll pray for him. Tough times need prayer warriors.
I grew up in the NYC area, so I know the landscape. I'm in NYC regularly for various reasons. Believe it or not one is becasue my POPS is in and out of the hospital regularly too! So I can feel what you are going through. But I get there for business reasons also. Was up for three days this week, and had all of one day off to just mess around.
PM me and we'll exchange phone numbers. I can never list all the things to do and music shops to see in the Metro Area in this blog. But here are a few quick notes:
NYC does have some fine music shops but there in now only one Andy dealer, unless Sam Ash, which Manny's was a part of, is going to fold the Manny's business into the main store. Manny's had some REALLY nice CT's a month ago. And SA does have some serious construction going on in one of its bay's, so maybe that is exactly what they are doing.
Check out Mike Stern, and Les Paul. They play all the time up there. Bring an acoustic and hang out in the parks and find a jam.
You might enjoy a ride over to NJ or up to CT too for some things to do. There is an excellent shop in Central Jersey, which you will pass on your way up.
I will tell you if you want REALLY good New York pizza go to Joe's on Bleeker. Best Pizza in NYC. The rest is all swill, (not really, but Joes is that good!)
If you want pizza like they make in Italy, go to Napoli or Grimaldi in Hoboken, (across the river in NJ).
Also, Houston Street is pronounced HOW STON. DO NOT MESS THAT ONE UP ON A CAB RIDE!
Call me. I'll give you some ideas.
Again, good luck to your POPS.

Is your dad having anything heart-related at NY pres? I know a bunch of the cardiologists in the cath lab there. Some of the best in the world. NO lie!

Hang in there, and best of luck with your Dad. I'm sure your "being there" is a huge help.
What to do in NYC??? Yikes, where does one start?? I, too, was born and raised in the area. Here are a couple of ideas, off the top of my head;
You MUST experience a corned beef sandwitch at either Carnegie Deli;
http://www.carnegiedeli.com/
.......or Katz's Deli;
http://www.katzdeli.com/presentation.html
If you're really smart, TRY BOTH!!! LOL
There is a guy, who works at Guitar Center Manhattan named Eliot Jacobs, who you might hook up with. Eliot is a good friend to Roy and Tom, and me
!! He's a GREAT GUY, a great guitarist, and a real expert on all things guitar, tone, and in particular vintage "stuff". Eliot only works one day a week in the Manhattan store, as he runs the GC Cherry Hill, NJ the other four days. The NYC GC store has an excellent selection of vintage stuff, and even if they lack Anderson guitars, you will find some other cool stuff. And, if you find and meet Eliot, it will be well worth your time!! If you want to hook up with Eliot, PM me. If you hook up with Eliot, try to get him to go to lunch with you at the Chinese place about 3 blocks from his store. They make GREAT home made chinese noodles!!! Some of the best chinese food I've ever had.

fogg,
We have driven into lower Manhatten in 45 minutes non rush hour time. Parkway, Turnpike, Lincoln Tunnel and your are there. Stayed at the Mariott Marquis I think.
Iridium Club and 25 great restaurants within walking distance.

There is a rehearsal studio, Ultra Sound. It is on West 30th between 7th and 8th. They do amp sales of ALL kinds of boutique and vintage stuff. Do that after 30th St guitars. They are down the block from each other. That is a good used and vintage shop and kind of a must see, as Dave points out.

Been a while since I've been there. I used to rehearse there. They are on three floors. 6,7,8 I think. Not sure any more how they display amps for sale. Google Ultra Sound NYC.
