Ebony and ivory

Picked up some dominoes at an antique estate sale.

Supposed to be half ivory and half ebony.

How do you tell if something is ivory???:confused:

Show it a peanut and see if it responds. Hopefully it won't!

Synthetic ivory can be REALLY good. Telling if the material is legit is probably not possible from just looking at it....unless you can get some sort of expert to look at the items.

It is also important to remember that 'ivory' can be taken from different animals. One may think 'elephant' when the word ivory comes up the truth is that ivory can also come from sea mammals.....walrus in particular.

and smell the smoke. You should be able to tell instantly whether it's a natural or man-made material. I saw this trick on one of the antique shows.

I'd stick with the peanut test.:D
