Recording acoustic guitar parts has become a huge challenge in my basement studio due to the high level of noise my two young boys make - often sounds like a small herd of elephants through my earphones.

Has anyone used the Line 6 acoustic variax in their recordings and if so, what are your thoughts? I am not looking to record solo parts like a Pierre Bensusan - just big strummed chords to add depth to the electric guitars.

Personally, I like moving some air with my Larrivee and a good mic but, when my boys start playing, it gets really noisy.

I appreciate any comments.

we have one of the cheap ones here they gave us for some favor we did for them. it's a pretty terrible guitar, but it is a cheap guitar so i'm not saying it should be better than it is, but given that, i'm not sure somebody who has a nice acoustic, like you have, would want to record with it. why not put a pickup in the larrivee?

Would an under saddle p/u work best? I am concerned about the pinging - although, once the acoustic is in the mix, I wonder if the ping would even be heard.

If I go with a p/u, any particular brand or model?

The Line 6 acoustic is a great tool to have. It is great live too... no feedback! Plus you can have 12-string sounds with only having to tune 6 strings. Who wants to tune up a 12-string at a live gig?

My 2 cents.

Stys.. The L.R. Baggs Element is a great under saddle p/u. Check em out.

I am in Singapore and bought a Taylor BBT to bang around on at the pool. Pietro, from this forum, recommended a K&K Pure Western system. I researched it, ordered it from the US and installed it myself. It's non-invasive and sound GREAT. I picked up a Para DI and it's awesome. None of that piezo quack. Suriel is dead on.

Everyone has their favorite acoustic pickups. This one is truly amazing. Yes, it has a tone of its own, but oh, what a tone.

A warm thanks for all your replies. I have some homework to do investigating all the suggestions. I think I am going to add a p/u to my Larrivee.

With the p/u and mic'ing the guitar - I do have a small window of opportunity when the boys go to bed where I can record some good, noiseless acoustic tracks.

I did play the Variax and had a hard time adjusting to the guitar itself. Not too sound condescending but, it felt like a toy.

Once again, thanks.
