I had originally came very close to buying a Cobra (sort of a translucent yellow/gold) back in '95-96, but didn't pull the trigger because that particular guitar sounded too much like a tele- more "twang" than "pow!". This past January I was at the NAMM show to look at other items of interest, when I happened to see the TA booth in Hall E (the basement) and couldn't resist looking- there were some beautiful instruments there, and the Cobra example was gorgeous! Roy Fought was there, and I tell you, he could probably sell a guitar to a one-armed deaf person, but I (just barely) resisted because I haven't been playing much over the past several years, thought they were too expensive for a mediocre player, etc.; But damn if Roy didn't put the idea back into my head....I didn't buy anything but I found myself browsing the TA website and reading up on things. Next thing I know I am surfing TA dealer websites when I come across this:

I am a sucker for blue telegibs, my current [update 3/7/09: former] guitar is a blueburst G&L ASAT Deluxe. This is a Jack's Pacific BlueBurst H1-/H2+ which actually came out too dark vs the usual color, but is absolutely perfect for me- if I had custom ordered a guitar it would be just like this one! Sometimes when you find the right one you just have to go for it. Damn you, Roy Fought, and special thanks to Bruce at Wildwood Guitars in Colorado- doing an internet deal comes with some risk because you can't really try out the guitar, but this one plays amazing and has the tone I am looking for [Insert Anderson Guitar revelations here].

Now, I need to get an amp to go with it! I am thinking Mesa Lone Star Classic, I need a nice versatile combo for classic rock sounds, I don't do metal, but need enough gain on the lead to get that smooth "violin" tone. I am open to suggestions....!

Welcome!!

Beautiful guitar. Jack's Blue is one of my favorite colors. Since my name is Jack I guess I'll have to get one someday. I bought my first about a year ago and it's become my #1 guitar. I carry a 2004 Strat Deluxe as a back up but it never gets used.

I just bought a Randal RM50, which is a poor mans version of the Egnater Mod50. It's a 6L6 (can really use 6L6, EL34, 6550 and other I think) power amp with pluggable pre-amps. It's very versatile because you can put two preamps in it and have for instance a Twin Reverb in one channel and a Plexi or something else in the other. They make a 20 watt and a 100 watt version if you need more or less.

Welcome to the Cobra club. I recently got a Hollow one myself and I just adore it.

Nice. Welcome. Yeah, I know what you mean about that Roy guy. :)

Mesa's are nice (I have a Stiletto Trident). The Randall MTS series are nice too (I have the RM100 combo with a bunch of modules). Good luck on your quest for tone.

Well, I went for the Mesa Lone Star Classic....I'll let you all know how it goes. I did get to compare it to the Stiletto Ace, but it was just not my cup o'tea.

Thanks everyone!

By the way, and sorry if this is a real noob question: When I got my Cobra, it came with this long piece of plastic between the strings and the frets- when I first opened the case, for half a second I thought I had a fretless guitar! Is that for shipping only, or is it a good idea to hang on to it and use it whenever I put the guitar back in its case?

Man I think everyone here had the same experience. When I picked mine up, for a second or two I thought that a horrible mistake must have been made and I had been given a fretless too. I used mine quite religiously for several months. Now I don't even know where it is.
Welcome to the faithful.

Tom recommends keeping the fret protector on in the case. It's easy to do, so I do it on my Crowdster. I don't have one for the Hollow Cobra. I suppose I could get one or make one... I probably ought to have one for my non-SS fret guitars.

Fretless Guitar Fakeout Victim #1847 I wonder if whoever packs a new TAG for shipment thinks about this.

Nice guitar, beautiful wood. At the 07 and 08 NAMMs, TAG had a Mesa Lonestar Special to demo with. The LSS has been my favorite amp for a long time. I bet the HB's of your guitar and a Mesa LSC are a great matchup too.

Good Luck with your gear!
