Swapping P/Up's in a Drop Top

I think I know the answer to this one (and I think it's similar to asking the Supreme Commander to replace a vintage trem w/ a locking trem on a TAG), but is it possible to replace a single coil with a hum p/up in a drop top? If not, then it's due to the potential cracking of the acrylate finish?

the finish isn't a problem. the singles have a pretty nice round over on their cavity, and the humbucker ring is really really close to not quite covering that. sometimes it works, sometimes there is a slight peekaboo on one end.
