Can anyone shed some light on what colors are acceptable for selection on a new TAG? I own quite a few Andersons which were chosen from stock that the dealer happened to have at the time. Now that I have decided to get a few backups of my current favorite ProAm, I keep getting shot down on my choices. Actually, 2 selections downed personally. In speaking to a buddy, he indicated the same issues (different dealer) and chose to go with Suhr due to frusterations. Speaking for myself, both colors are ones shown on the Anderson website in the gallery, and are not (to me anyway) outlandish. Dakota red is the one color that I really wanted, but that was squashed for reasons which elude me. So, is there a secret handshake or something that is required to get the color you want? Am I to suppose submitting a color and having a paint match made would similarly be out? This really has me bummed on the dakota red!

Kyle - get anything in red - like bowling ball!:p
Seriously, just call the shop. Short of effecting the environment, they will try accomodate your color request as much as possible.

Call Roy at Anderson. He will actually work with you to completely design your guitar. Trust me he will spend a LOT of time with you. Based upon personal experience, from talking with many others, and from blogs on this site, partnering with Roy to develop your design is really the only way to get it perfect.

I'm curious: Who is shutting you down on color choices? The dealer?

As Dan attests, Roy will bend over backwards (and then some) to make sure you get what you want. Based on his interior decorating skills manifested through the decor at TAGW, Roy is incredibly creative and artistic!

He's also one of the nicest people I've met in my 5+ decades.

Depending on where you live you may even want to pay them a personal visit.

Good luck and have fun creating your new TAGs!

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the dealer indicated he had spoken with Roy and that the first several colors I wanted were DOA. The exact rationale for this was unclear and simply boiled down to choose another color. I did submit an order for one in inca silver and, for now, chrome yellow. The dealer is a very well known shop and does a large amount of TAG orders. I don't believe there would be any reason the dealer wouldn't try to bend over backwards to get what I want. But still, no dakota red! Michael, do you know what shade of red the bowling ball base color is?

we offer over 150 colors. you have chosen 2 colors that we have not even made one per year of. the total of all chrome yellow and dakota red guitars we have made over a 22 year period is 19 out of 14,000 guitars. a quart of custom color has a shelf life of about a year and a cost of close to $100 now. it's hard to justify both the cost of the finish and the cost of disposing of it when it goes bad(remember this is california) for such limited demand. those are about as far apart as you could be, is there nothing in between that would make you smile?

Kyle, when I did the Red BB, basically Roy told me that it was closest to their T-red. However, and this is a big however, Pat Wilkins did the spray on your ProAM. So, I'd inquire with Roy whether Pat would be available to do the work on your next axe. There will be a slight upcharge, but well worth it if you get the color you've got in mind.

Tom,

Thanks for jumping into the thread. Where can I see a list or find a link to the available colors? Does the paint mfg. have online swatches like House of Kolor or DuPont? I was simply choosing from the colors in your gallery of past guitars and those from the Anderson Alley website. I would have no problem paying the upcharge for the paint if that was required. If the choice is strictly from within the 150 colors you mention, I am back to not knowing what those colors are or how they correspond to some point of reference.

Michael,

What is "t-red"? If you decide to unload your Cajun Red DT, give me a shout.

any photos we have are in the guitar gallery. we've had bad experiences with people seeing only small color samples. they have a hard time envisioning what it will look like in the guitar with all the trim added. colors are constantly being added. we seldom remove any, you happened to pick 2. 80% of the colors are mixed by us based on customer request or just for fun. the transparents are pretty easy to formulate. solid colors are much more difficult to manipulate because we don't have all the solid pigments. we have had a policy about custom colors for several years where anyone could give us a car paint code and we would get it made. there was a +$200 retail for that. we had only a couple takers so we stopped talking about it.

Hey Kyle, "t-red" is transparent red, AKA the Anderson version of "red":D :p

Didn't Fender used to do that in the 50's?

Tom,

Will you still allow this? I can easily get paint codes for what I want and am more than willing to pay for the materials and hassle.
