View Full Version : Which Volume Pedal

I have a Crowdster "+" and I am wanting to add a volume pedal to my effects loop (for the electric side anyway). I was looking at an Ernie Ball pedal but I was noticing that they have one for "Active" and "Passive" instruments. Which one will I be wanting? Also, I think I am going to use the pedal after my overdrive pedal (Guitar -> overdrive -> volume -> delay...) as I don't want to change the amount of overdrive, just the volume. I don't know if that changes anything.

Any recommendations? Thanks a lot!

I'm pretty sure you're gonna want the passive one for the electric side on your C+. Interesting concept on the volume pedal after your d pedal. I like it...

I've been extremely happy with my Goodrich pedal. You can get information from them at:

Which model depends on what Distortion pedal you have and its impedence, both when on or bypassed. The "Active" EB pedal is a low impedence model, which would work if your distortion pedal is buffered, thereby giving you a low impedence output whether on or bypassed. The "Passive" EB pedal is for high impedence signals, good for using right after a guitar with high impendence pickups or after a distortion pedal that is true bypassed, with no buffer. However, you may still experience some tone suck on the true bypass pedal because most distortion pedals will have a lower impedence output when activated.

Thanks a lot all. I ended up finding an Ernie Ball Jr "passive" pedal for cheap so I gave it a shot. It seems to work great so far. I didn't really notice any tone changes with the pedal in line when playing through my monitors anyway.

As for the "overdrive" pedal, I am using a Tech21 SansAmp Liverpool pedal. I dont know any of the technical details of the pedal, but it seems to work just fine with the volume pedal.

This thread is closed, but I thought I'd add a bit of info. The "active" pedal is designed for keyboards (I actually called them a long time ago about this very question). If you've got a guitar with passive pickups, you definetly want the passive volume pedal. No idea if you have active pickups, but I'll bet you still want the passive pedal.

The Ernie Ball and Goodrich pedals seem to be of equal quality and neither affects your tone much at all (I've tried them side by side and in a quiet room). The selection of one over the other really comes down to feel. They feel very different. I preferred the Ernie Ball. I also like it's aluminum body and conveyor belt tread.
