Hi folks,
I have a Rivera Chubster 40 (112) that I love...but, I am not crazy about the speaker..a Celestion 70/80. To me it has too boomy, chunky lows (it could also be the cab design i realize), and the high end is too brittle. i am looking for something 8 ohm, at least 50-75w with a warm upper mid and not so low-lows..
I was thinking V30, Celestion's website suggests the G12T-75 in almost every 112 boutique combo situation. I have also read that then 70/80 is an economy speaker ...which makes me wonder why Rivera would use it?
Anyway, I thought I would get some input..
Btw, I play in a variety band, top40/funk/motown/beach and jazz if that helps
thanks!
Shaun

here are a few i personally like:

v30
g12-65
emi wizard
lead 80
cannibus rex

i have used them all the situation you describe, but i would favor the v30 & g12-65 first. in my experience rivera's tend to be ice picky, other than the rake and tbr series. my .02.

I had a Chubster for a while and felt the same way as Suriel. A little bit too brittle. I think the V30 might be a good safe bet. I have that in an F30 that was also a bit sharp edged and it made a big difference.

Maybe a Celestion Gold? Might want to ask DT.

You might try contacting Paul Rivera directly, via his web site, and see what he suggests as possible replacement speakers????

G12H-65 has a very nice grind, if in the right cab. V30's are sweet and sound different with cab and baffle differences.
A few ques: pine box or baltic birch? (sorry I don't know much on your particular cab), open or closed back? is the speaker mounted from the back of the baffle? (some, I've seen are thru the front being much more 'toppy', a shrilly sounding speaker), try a bean blocker in front of the speaker to tame some of the highs?
I modded a paper dust cover to a material cover and it changed the tone and the grind of the speaker.
A combo that is a very nice one for me anyway, I built for myself), is a 2x12 cab, 1/2" baltic closed back cab. Birch baffle with G12H-30 add the G12-65. Works well for all styles. Nice Fender cleans and thick crunch and cutting solo tones.
I guess if you can and have oppertunity to try something, you can make it your own.
Only my 2 cents.

I think it's worth looking at some of Weber's stuff too. You'll save some dough, and his speakers sound great. I LOVE the blue dog (his take on the celestion blue), and he'll make them in higher wattage ratings. Great stuff...definitely worth a look.

You'll have better luck calling Rivera than emailing them. I've sent them emails and never gotten replies but I've called and spoken directly with Paul SR. and Paul Jr. and they were very nice and helpful.

I had a Quiana that came with a V30 in it and it sounded very good. I had an R30 with a G12T-55 in it I think and it had a tone similar to what you describe. I put a JBL, D120 I think, in it and it sounded great, but was much heavier!!! Eventually I wound up using the R30 most of the time with a Marshall 1936 cabinet, so I put the stock speaker back in, but it was awesome with the JBL for what I was using it for, mostly clean, which it sounds like what you're doing, mostly clean. If you can find a used EV Force 12, I had good luck using them in some Peavey amps that I had years ago. Don't know how the Force 12 would compare with modern speakers.

I wanted some new speakers for my Fender Twin Amp so I emailed Ted Weber from his site and he got back to me the same day with a recommendation, which I ordered but they haven't come in yet. I told him what amp I was using, what kind of music I played and what I was looking for and he got right back to me with a recommendation that made perfect sense.

Good luck.

I wound up getting an 8 ohm V30! Just like I predicted, it warmed the amp up considerably. Paul Jr. at Rivera was very helpful. He said the 70/80 and that particular cabinet was partially designed for players who use alot of chunky drop D kinda stuff anyway. I would have liked to try some of the suggestions and even read about many on the internet, but after awhile, the graphs and specs start jumbling together....its subjective I guess. I went with the V30 because I liked what it did for my Classic30. 119 bucks out the door. Not bad for a mod..
thanks again for the help everyone.
