View Full Version : Floyd Rose locking nut - not a perfect fit

I believe this is the original Floyd Rose locking nut on this 1998 Drop Top. The nut width is 1 11/16th inches.

The nut seems too narrow for the neck by 1mm on each side (total 2mm). You can't really tell from the camera angle angle in the picture below, but it is the same on both sides (ie. not shifted to one side). I bought this guitar second hand about 5 years ago, in mint condition, and there are no obvious changes anywhere on the guitar.

Is this normal, or has someone changed the nut somewhere along the way?

It doesn't really bother me that much, but every now and then I keep thinking that maybe it didn't actually leave the factory that way.

that's normal. the shop uses an R2 (1 5/8") locking nut even on their 11/16" necks for string alignment reasons. Supreme commander?

That's what I originally thought it might be - except - I measured the string spacing, and it is 1 11/16th.

we use the R2(1 5/8") nut because we like the string spacing better. the R3(1 11/16") nut puts the strings too close to the edge of the neck for my taste.

Does that mean the string spacing is actually 1 5/8"?

I have a Cobra S on the way that I specced with a 1 11/16" string spacing. Is this going to feel much wider than the Drop Top?

the 1 5/8 and 1 11/16 are neck widths, they are not string spacings. we space the strings in from the edge of both necks widths the same, so the E to e spacing is wider on the 1 11/16" width neck. the R2 floyd nut has a spacing that is closer to the spacing we like on our 1 11/16" neck width so we use that. if we used the R3 nut, you would have the strings falling off the edge of the neck easier. the E to E spacing on the R2(1 5/8) nut is virtually the same as we cut our 1 11/16" nut slots.

Excellent! I was worried for a moment there. The string spacing on my Drop Top is perfect. :)
