View Full Version : Anyone use an SD2R ?
HI
After receiving Tom's wiring diagram and completing the conversion, I'm still unhappy with the SA2R in the neck of my drop top.
I rarely use the SA1 in the mid on it's own, so that can stay and I love the bridge pickup.
In humbucking mode, the SA2R is too muddy when clean, and in single coil mode, too shrill.
I've had a look at the site and think the SD2R might be a better solution.
Has anyone got one ?
What's your opinion ?
I'm looking for a Stevie Ray neck tone.
Anyone know where I can get a replacement pickup ??
Many thanks
Doesn't ANYONE use the SD series pickups ?
Are they that bad ??
Which of the noise cancelling range would you suggest as the most versatile for the neck position of my Alder /maple, maple /rosewood Drop top ??
Need help please.

I have SD1/SD1Rs on my basswood/maple Drop Top. They sound pretty good on that combo.
Maybe the SA2 is too hot for what you're trying to do. Have you considered temporarily swapping the middle and neck pickups to see if a lower output works better in the neck position?
HI
Yea, I'm thinking I might be better off with either an SA1R or an SD1R.
I've messaged Tom and waiting for his wisdom.
Still desperate for opinions though.
i'm reading this like it has to be humcancelling? if that's the case, i would think the SA1 would be the right direction. in the quiet mode, it will be brighter and clearer. if the SA2 split is too bright, then the SA1 will surely be too bright.
Hi Tom
Yes I'd like to be able to use it hum cancelling if possible.
What is your opinion of the SD series ?
Your site description makes them sound good.
Why are they not popular ?
they're more scooped than the sa's and fatter seems to be in style these days.

I am using a SD2 in the bridge position.
It came stock that way.
The serial # search on the TAG website will tell you the details on this guitar.
I like the sound of it, it's a good match with the SA1-SA1R.
The vintage voicing really shines in this application.
It's a bit bright, but in that position, even an SA might be.
This was my 1st TAG, and that's what started it all!
Good luck.

For a while I was considering changing my SD1 neck to an SA1 to fatten up the sound a bit. But, once I'd cranked the volume up a bit more on my tube amp, I started to take a liking to the glassiness of the SD1. The H3 in the bridge gives me all the 'fatness' that I need. :)
wolf, your first post says neck position. my responses have been based on that but it seems like others are talking about bridge. which is it?
Tom
You're correct, it's the neck position I'm looking for advice on.
Usually I'll keep trying until I get a match for the particular voice of the guitar but I really want to keep this one as original as possible.
The guitar's acoustic voice seems a bit mid range light, and I think my choice of SA2R might have been too hot, so I'm thinking your suggestion of an SA1R might be right.
I go into hospital for surgery tomorrow ( 13th ) and will be housebound for 2 weeks at least, recovering.
I plan to play it a lot more and try to work out exactly what is missing for me to help clarify my question.
Thank you for all the advice so far.

Go with the SDs. I had the same dilema with a recently sold DT.
I recently got to try a Maple/Alder DT in my local dealer's store -- and bang! That is the sound I was after.
IMHO the SDs are closer to what I consider a Vintage tone (as best can be achieved with these P/U types) than do the SAs. The SAs are more modern sounding IMO.
Thanks for the replies.
I've decided to go with a pair of Kinmans, as per my Tyler and Suhr.
I love the stuff and was trying to get my Anderson to sound the same....in the end, why not just GET the same pickups ?
I'm having the mini coil split connected just to the H2+.
It's in being done as we speak while I go stir crazy at home recovering from my surgery !!!
Here it is

I've had Kinman 69's in the mid and neck, the mini split only works on the bridge now ( which I absolutely LOVE ) and I've retained the pull add bridge on the Tone pot.
The tech did a amazing soldering job, looks factory original.
I'm SO please. Gigged it 3 times now and it's destined to become my number 1 !!!!! :)

Well I have SD1R SD1 H2+ and I like the sound when only using the neck SD1R What I favor most with the SD`s is when using the bridge H2+ and the SD1R I `ve got almost a LP sound, when roling down the tone knob.. the clasic strat tones is punchy but not have the bottom as a old Fender. mikked up in a PA at my oponion the SD`s is good.
Sorry, I'm not into recording, All my playing is geared to live performance.
I've no idea how to record at home.
A pc keeps me from practicing the guitar so taking time to learn how to record is not time well spent for me.
Sorry
Trust me, I've done 20 gigs with my new set up now and it's perfect.
