Any guesses what it's talking about? It mentions "Drop Top 7". Are 7-strings coming back?

I think it has to do with neck woods....

Recall Tom's Atom a few weeks ago had an unidentified species of neck wood.

The whole 7-string is to throw us off.

Reading the other GOTW thread seems to point to that as well. Sitka may be too obvioius, but that could be really cool for a neck. Wonder if Spruce is strong enough for a neck and/or fretboard. Carvin uses Alder for necks, but also puts 2 Graphite stability rods in the neck.

I'd sign up for a new neck wood, just to check it out. I prefer necks with the same woods for both neck and fretboard, so I have a bias for maple/maple or rosewood/rosewood necks.

It either a B-Bender or a Drop D Banjo tuner.

They already have a Drop-D tuner. . I have one on all three of my Andersons. It's very cool.

I would love it if it were a B bender. I need another T anyways. :)

It mentions the Drop Top 7 but shows a headstock with 6 tuners.

If Tom does bring back sevens I know a lot of people who would very happy. :D

Well say,

If we use any of what we got from reading the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew as kids, the message clearly states: Don’t let the headings mislead you; they have been purposely selected to give no clues.

This plus the fact that there are 6 tuners must mean no 7, but 6 strings.

Let’s see, why would they show a headstock? Black? How is that important or unique? My uncle has a black headstock on his old...

Wait a minute, maybe it is just a...?

I am so confused!

I bet it is either a Jazz Box or some other kind of F Hole- Hollow type guitar.

Why Drop top seven?

There are Drop Top T, Drop Top, Drop Top Classic. All available in Hollow versions. That makes six verisons of the Drop top.

An F Hole version would make seven.

Am I on the right path Roy(maybe)?

a 7 position switch, replacing the 5 plus add-bridge push/pull?

SonicGator

OK, I'll play some more.

The picture shows a "maple" headstock with black face...though the image makes it look a little more tinted yellow...picture alteration or actual?

Tom mentioned on another thread the Sitka region of Alaska. Trees there are:

Spruce, Yellow Cedar, Red Cedar, Hemlock, and Pine, none of which I've ever heard of being used for a neck. Pine stocks are diminished in that region as Spruce has become a more "dominant" type there (natural change I believe), though Sitka Spruce will shortly be in very limited if not non-existent availability in the new few years (article on this in the latest Guitar Player). Or maybe Tom was just throwing us even further off the trail?

Random Thought: Wonder what Hemlock would sound like and has it ever been used for a guitar body?

i can say with a degree of certainty that this one is not spruce, can't say the same about the last one. i can also say with a degree of certainty that this one is not maple, tinted or not. i can say that we have been playing with some pretty fun mutations these days. things you would not normally expect to see together. this past weekend i played a new guitar that was quite a surprise and unexpectendly(sp) got played the whole weekend. i have to say that this is a pretty fun job.

If only this were the case. Tom, I think we are officially up to 4 people expressing a passionate desire for an Anderson Jazz Box (sorry to put words in your mouth Danno', but it serves my completely selfish self-interest, I think Tom might build a Jazz Box if we get 10 people on the interest list) NOT :D

UGH!

It says "GUITARS of the week! Not GUITAR of the week.

...something new, something longed for, something hoped to appear, something wanting to be seen, and something expected...

It is going to be SEVEN drop tops in one week, probably representing the best of what we all like in our guitars, or want to see, or expected, like the VA5 or something!!

HA! How is that ROY (maybe)!

Do share...how does a Spruce neck sound? Is it strong enough by itself to be used as a neck or does it need some sort of stabilization? Can it be used as a fretboard as well, possibly even a 1-piece neck? And those questions lead to...what body wood should I order with it!!!!???? :D

As for the surprise GOTW...lighter colored woods...

Canary, Goncalo Alves, Korina, Alder, Ash, Afra, Cedar (Yellow)

Or, did you find a light piece of...

Mahogany, Koa, Kingwood, or Pau Ferro

Am I even close?

tom
05-31-2007, 03:00 PM
close? that's such a relative term. i tink you're all trying too hard. a jazz box? i wouldn't know where to start. think simpler.
spruce is very interesting, but not something we'll probably offer. it's plenty strong, but would be too soft for frets to stay in and wouldn't hold up to fingernails digging into a fingerboard surface.

bud

a jazz box? i wouldn't know where to start.

Since the interest seems to be exploding (we have 2 additions and add the 3 previous, we are up to five)....

Start with a Crowdster Plus, add a neck pickup, 1 11/16 nutwidth with Happy Medium profile (probably the nail in the coffin), wrap around w/ optional bigsby bridge.

(and I didn't even request a piezo)

I'm gonna stop, I feel a smack up the side of the head coming my way from Newbury Park. It's Danno's fault, he brought up the whole jazz box thing.

So Tom,

It’s Roy. Hi there.

I have been reading what you have been writing about the Guitar of the Week and all the clues and all the discussion. With great love I would like to ask, you don’t really know what the guitar is, do you? I don’t think I’m certain either. I could be wrong here but as I understand it, Jesse found that picture in one of those big coffee table books and showed it to Dave while Iain was looking over his shoulder. Art gave it to Eric, who scanned it and dropped it on the site to see if anyone knew what it was because it was just a head shot. It seems to be a mystery to all of us. We will try and match up the picture to one of the guitars around here before Sunday.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

I'm leaning towards a 25-1/2" Atom now.

I do think that the neck wood is new too, but that in and of itself shouldn't be worth all this hype, right?

tom

I got it!

SEVEN PICKUPS! SEVEN H3+ PICKUPS WIRED IN SERIES with no switches or volume controls or tone controls or anything! That HAS to be it. of course, the guitar will only have 9 frets or somethin', but it'll be great for rhythm! and it'lll be so loud you won't have to turn the amp's power on.

Nigel Tufnel would LOVE it!

Seriously, I'm an f-hole guy. Put an f-hole in it and I'll buy it. I bought a coffee mug with an f-hole I'm such a sucker. Of course, the coffee leaks all over the place but...

...Hey this is fun, you oughtta keep us guessing more often! Everybody... enjoy and embrace the CHAOS!
