Any one familiar with the Suzuki Method for piano? My wife and I are thinking of enrolling our four year old son. Here is a link with some info. We really don't want to turn him off to musicianship, due to a bad first experience. So it is vital if any one knows good or bad please share.

THANKS!

OH DON'T WORRY! I'll teach him to be a guitarist too!

Hey Danno!

Don't know about Susuki for piano but my daughter did violin for a number of years. The basic concept is to begin teaching simple songs progressing with difficulty in music and technique. Sight reading taught, but the idea is to get the student playing recognizable music from the beginning.

I stayed in most of the lessons with my daughter to help reinforce what she was learning during the week. It was pretty cool, almost made me want to learn, but if you think guitars are expensive....!

As with all things though, getting the right teacher is important.

I had both my kids in Suzuki at a very early age - 3 or so. Wheaton College had a great program with great teachers.

We took the piano path. I loved the program and would recommend it without hesitation. VERY effective.

There other "play" elements to the program - Once a week all the students would get together to do stuff like making silly noises and rhythms in a group setting and more. Made it fun for the kids.

You need alot of patience - a big part of the program is parental involvement. A young childs attention span is very short.

As I remember, there is some theory that learning music is related to language acquisition...there is a "prime" time very early in brain development where such tasks come easily to the child. I also remember something about being related to math skills....

But - my own memory is fading as I age....take it with caution.
