View Full Version : Nylon String Crowdster?

Just wondering, I have checked with a few top tier Anderson Dealers about this, and was told the BFTS could be difficult to adapt, Tom would likely elect to NOT do such an instrument, but compared to other nylon guitars, I am tempted to get another Crowdster just for this use even if I have to just recut the nut myself.
A little crazy but the worse that could happen, is I would have to replace the stock nut and go back to steel strings?
also the EQ on the Baggs system might not be optimized for this string type although again, it is so good, I would guess it would have to be better than what's out there regardless. Contemplated use is like many, worship service use although we are free to have amps on stage and not forced to use "in ear" and PODs etc. (thank goodness)
wrapping string ends around discarded string ends ( or I have seen some nylon sets with steel string ends as well) would be the last small hurdle to overcome.
Comments/Cautions I've overlooked? I am continually amazed how versatile this guitar is- just trying to expand the envelope a bit more.
thank you.

I suspect you are pushing the envelope a little too far actually. Tom or Roy will no doubt chime in here.
I would seriously suggest you look carefully at the Godin line of "solid-body" nylon string guitars. WAY under a grand, and mine is just FANTASTIC! I'm glad I got it, for me... as seldom as I use nylon strings, I'd never spend the dough on a Nylon Crowdster. I'm a steel-string man, so I'll be saving my pennies for the day when you can get an Atom with a PowerBridge.

Remember those thin Gibson/Chet Atkins nylon string electrics? I saw one out on eBay recently. I wonder how they compare in sound to the Godin???
Re: the Atom with the PowerBridge, I heard last year that Fishman(sp?) isn't making the Powerbridges any more.
have thought about it. there are some obsticles to overcome. string fastening is an issue, but i have a concept in my head for that. intonation will not be a problem, but will be very different than the steel string version. we did have a customer try it, and it did ok, but i would think the eq would have to be revoiced. also we'd have to talk about fb radius and width. i know there are varied oppinions about what they should be. won't happen anytime too soon as there i still much to do around here, but someday.

After an obnoxious amount of guitars (thank goodness for ebay), Tom's guitars are the best solution for me. I have played the Godin's, had a Chet, and a Taylor nylon, and again, The Crowdster just floors me with so many things. Even though it is not touted as a lead instrument, something about it allows me to play like an animal- speed, cleanliness of note blah blah blah. (also grounds for considering my Atoms and HDT to be converted to small frets but that's another topic).
I'm not looking to have a "correct" classical guitar, and the 1.73 nut is not far away from what I am looking for (Kurt Sands 2 inch is way too wide for my tastes for example), I just like the tone variation and a way to save nails which when I fingerpick rip my nails apart after a couple of days. Fake nails are another area I have explored without a lot of success (I actually much prefer the tone of my natural nails anyway- a bit more high end).
Anyway as always thank Tom for taking the time to answer an off the wall question. Yet another example of extreme excellence in customer service.

I never played the chet nylon, but I did try to like and buy the Chet steel string. It sounded too honky to me... I didn't like it. I have to say, I don't think it held a candle to the Godins, of which I own three (but not the steel string... I was gonna get it, but then, The Crowdster arrived, and alas...).
And now Godin has a new guitar that looks like it is kinda their answer to the Crowdster Plus... I like it!

But... I'm stickin'. Just got back from Saturday night worship, and again... that C+ REALLY did the trick again!
(I'm surprised, actually, that David Crowder never used the Godins (maybe he disliked them), but then again, we wouldn't have the Crowdster maybe then, and then life would NOT be worth living...
