Which do you guys prefer: the 1 and 5/8 or the 1 and 11/16 nut width and why? Do you guys also think it makes a big difference in feel? And lastly, Tom, why is it that the cobras only go with the 1 and 11/16 nut width? I personally love the 1 and 5/8 nut width and have a little bit more hard time with the 1 and 11/16 nut width for whatever reason and really wish the cobra would have the 1 and 5/8 nut.

Well my fingers are fairly large, as are the tips.. so 1 11/16ths helps me better play ringing open chords, or arpegiatied chords cleaner. As for feel, it's subtle to me, just helps with chording.

I'd think preference would correspond to hand/finger size. I have really little hands, so I prefer 1-5/8", but my DTClassic has 1-11/16" & feels better than my original '58 Strat, which has a beautiful, comfy & unusually small neck (Roger Sadowsky says it's the tiniest Strat neck he's ever seen). So, as usual, the overall design/build combination trumps the individual statistical elements. As to the Cobra, isn't 1-11/16" the traditional Gibson nut width?

My Cobra has the 1-11/16 and my HDT has the 1-5/8
I have no problem adjusting to both!!

I like the 1 11/16" nut width and I'm 6'3" tall -- maybe that's why. But I'm able to play cleaner leads with the wider spacing. For example, when doing the BBKing wiggle vibrato, the increased string-to-string spacing keeps me from bumping into adjacent strings.

With some guitars, a wider nut width brings a substantial change in the feel of the back of the neck. However, TA necks stay very consistent in overall feel when comparing the same profile in different nut widths. To me anyway.

AHHHH, I didn't know that-I thought the catalog stated the cobras only come with the wider nut width. I think I may send up my Hollow Cobra S for a nut change. How much would a nut change cost?

For me, it's really my right non fretting hand that I worry about. When I'm playing multiple string scales, I just feel more comfortable with the 1 and 5/8's width. I've got a lazy right hand.
