I'm ecstatic! I bought 05-09-06A from Northwest Guitars today. I've never actually owned anything resembling a tele, so I figured, why not start with an unbelievably nice one? Man this thing sounds and plays crazy good. I know all Andersons are nice, but I think this one had some extra special magic dust applied.

Suriel told me way back on this forum that an Anderson Hollow T is definitely a guitar to have. . . he was right.

The pickups in there sound good to me (TD1- TD3+). How do those (split) compare to the TV series?

Here are the specs, and pictures will follow tomorrow hopefully:

To answer your question Gary, the TD3's sound fantastic split. They have a little bit more upper-end sizzle than the TV's do so the TD's in split mode help contribute to the Tele thang that one may want to go after. I love them so much that on my T-Classic I wired them to always be in split mode. That guitar ALWAYS gets complements from those that hear it or play it.

Thanks for the info! The td's are what is in there now and they do sound great split. If I find that I don't use the series mode, I'll likely switch from the 5-way to a 3-way.
You guys outdid yourselves with these pickups.

Also, congrats on a great Army of Anyone showing on t.v. Friday night!

Congrats on the Hollow T. I have never been happier with a guitar, unless it's my Classic. I have been able to mimic the TV sound clips with my TD's. Slight noticeable difference, but both sound great.

Yeah, take it outside and get some nice pics in the ambient light.
Is that a problem? ;)

Ughhhhh. . .grey. .is. . . killing . . . me.

You should see the light that I have on my desk to combat the problem.

I'll definitely take some pics tonight, but they might not be too sunny. :)

A little bit of both. . using mostly the TopBoost module with the bridge pickup and the Blackface module with the middle position so far.

Also, this guitar loves the wah-wah! :)

I dig the vibe of this. It looks like a 40+ year old finish that's faded over the years to a nice warmth. Very classy.
You must have ran outside and taken the pics when the sun was shining for ten minutes this morning. ;)

really cool pictures of a top guitar, thanks for taking the time to share it with us :)
I just feel really sad that these guitars are going to be so thin on the ground from now...:(

EXACTLY!! I saw a glimmer of sun and ran outside to take pictures before going to work. By the time I left for work, it was gone.

What do you think about the pickguard choice? Any other style that would be better?

I feel very lucky to get this one. I've been looking at this one since it showed up at the store. I heard about the downsize and figured that it would be quite a while before I could get another one like this one, so I went ahead and picked it up even though it isn't the smartest thing for me to do financially. :)

I'm sure you'll be able to get one like it when you are ready, might just take a bit longer to get it.

I still get the feeling that I'm going to want a two-humbucker Cobra at some point, and I'm sure Tom will make me a really nice one. :)

On a different note about this guitar. . I didn't actually know the specs on it until I got home and looked them up. This neck feels REALLY good, and it's different than the wider nut and the TA Standard for Drop Top and Atom.

Gary, sweet Hollow T Classic!
Two questions:

1. how do you like the narrower nut and deeper neck carve?
2. how's the hollow ash on ash sounding relative to solid ash?
thanks!

I honestly didn't even notice that the neck was narrower when I played the guitar at the shop. I did notice that it was quite a bit deeper, and that it felt really good. My next Anderson will likely have the nut and neck profile as this one (but with jumbo frets. . .still love those the best although these feel right on this guitar.) I always thought my fat fingers wouldn't like this nut, but it works just fine.

I haven't played a solid Anderson T, so I'm not sure how that would compare. I'm also don't have much history with teles, so I don't know how to compare. It does sound mighty sweet though. It seems really alive harmonically with the amp cranked. . moreso than any other guitar I've played. I suspect that has to do with it being hollow. Being hollow also has the really cool side-effect of being the best unplugged, sitting-in-front-of-the-tv-and-practicing-scales guitar. :)

I'm thinking about M1/TM2's and wondering how "vintage" those sound. And binding is definitely the way to go. NICE!

Yum- very nice! Love the nice grain pattern and shade! The pearly guard
looks classy. Perhaps get a simple black one if you want it a more
spartan look :)

Do Anderson pickguards match up with 8-hole tele pickguards?

I was contemplating something a bit more vintagy off-white, maybe parchment or mint?

http://www.andersonguitars.com/images/guitarImages/06,04,2004_07-09-11.jpg

If I were going for something dark, I'd probably go for tortoise over black. I'm actually worried about losing contrast with darker pickguards like tortoise and black. If I had the TV neck pickup in there, that wouldn't be a problem. A friend has a hollow T with TV pickups. . I need to do the pepsi challenge, although his guitar is alder. :)

Of course, the shot of a drop top classic with the same tobacco fade and the tortoise pickguard always makes me drool, ie:

http://home.comcast.net/~g.mctaggart/tobacco_fade6.jpg

Hmmm. . . .

What flavor pickguards do you have? (I'm sure I'm missing a page on your site. :) )

Also, Tom, what's your favorite ash/ash body, maple, rosewood Hollow T pickups?

I think we are all assuming (well, I'm assuming) that with the downsize, the line for getting an Anderson guitar is going to get really really long so that getting one every six months might be difficult.

Wow, I just realized that I actually have been buying one about every six months since I found out about 'em. I'm never going to retire at this rate. :)

Cool. Might have to put a pickguard order in soon.

I don't think I'd ever want to do this, but are all hollow T's routed for a middle pickup? Just curious more than anything else.

TV and TD bridge pickups are routed the same, but TM is different, right? (Edit: found my answer here I think: http://andersonforum.com/board/showthread.php?p=27472#post27472 )

Are TV's weaker than TD's? How do the lows compare? I'm only using the TD's split so far. I might want to try the TV's at some point.

all are routed for middle pickup that have been made in the last 5-8 years. tv's are not weaker. the tv3 is fatter to me than the split td3. the td has more high highs, but the tv3 has wonderful growly mids and a bit of compression.

OK, sounds like I'll want to try out the tv's then. TV3 in bridge, and TV1- in the neck?

Also, since the middle pickup is routed, have you tried sticking a hidden dummy coil in the middle as a noise cancelling solution? Would that sound better with TV's than the TD pickups in series mode?

I have to say, this Hollow-T is very addictive. I'm going to have to put new strings on my other guitars so that they still feel loved until the honeymoon is over. :)

tom
11-16-2006, 05:59 PM
pickup sized dummy coils don't work, they change the sound badly. only the giant rear late coil does a good job. you could always stick one of those on. you would have to order the pickups wound the same direction though.

GaryMcT
11-16-2006, 06:03 PM
That's not a bad idea, except for having to stick that backplate on there somehow. The thought of drilling extra holes in the guitar hurts me. :) Any other ideas on how to attach one short of new holes? Also, are the TV's in impedance/resistance/whatever range to work with the big coil?

GaryMcT
11-16-2006, 06:09 PM
Hmmm, I wonder how hard it would be to get one of those big coils and the electronics with it and make a T pickguard that is really thin in the middle so that there is room for the coil. . . . Mmmm, home project. :)

Hey, Dave K. . wanna come over? :) hehehe.
