I was at the local guitar store waiting around when I picked up this guitar that has been hanging around for a long time just to noodle around to kill time:
http://www.andersonguitars.com/cfPages/showSingleGuitarGallery.cfm?passedID=15&finishID=111&bodyWoodID=12
I looked at the date of the guitar and wow-I hadn't realized that that guitar has been sitting around for almost 5 years already. I don't even remember seeing anyone play this guitar for the last 3 years. But anyway, wow-what an awesome guitar. Light as a feather, acoustically rich (about a billion times richer than the hollowbody spruce sitting next to it) and it played so well. Only the G string appeared to be a little out of tune. The strings didn't even look that beat. Truss rod probably could use a little tightening and the gold has neckplate has tarnished, but it's amazing how this guitar has stayed so new despite sitting in the store for so long. It's truly a testament to Anderson guitars that a guitar can stay that fresh for so long. I'm not a tele twang type person, but that guitar is just being begged to be played and sent to TAG for some hot rodding (TM3 bridge pickup and M1 pickup anyone??). Anyway, just some useless thoughts...

I can see why it would hang around a store that long--not my cup of tea, especially the white/tortois/maple neck look!

It's times like that when I ask the sales person:
"So how long has that poor thing been sitting there? What's the VERY best offer you could do?"?
One of these times, I'll get a break on one! :)

I hear ya! I don't think I've ever seen a new instrument that long at this particular shop. I never bothered playing it until now simply b/c I kinda associate it as a country guitar.

Lots of people associate with them country players and rightly so as lots of them play Tele's . Country players are cool, check out Albert Lee or Marty Stuart. So many good ones out there. I bought my first tele in 1993 . It took me a little while to get used to it but i stuck with it and after playing it a while it just kind of clicked instantly . it was like a light went off in my head and really understood the guitar from that moment on . They are a minimalistic guitar i suppose but i find them very versital . Obviously great for country, great R&B guitar for funky sort of chording stuff (middle position =very chimey sounding) and a great rock guitar in the bridge postion . Remember that bridge pickup has alot of windings on it so it can be pretty powerful. i find you have to tweak the tone knob a bit because some can be microphonic . I have two American Fender Teles, 52 & 62 reissues . Both really nice guitars . I suppose i prefer the ash one . (52) . Tele's are short, stubby and stiff unlike the strat . I like Keith Richards description of the tele " A bit like a sten gun, effective at close range" I'm sure my choice of a Cobra as my first Anderson was because i dig tele's although i know its a different beast than the Fender variety . With the cobra its a bit more like "unleash the fury" .

Teles. My first guitar - a '77 Fender, which I modified with a middle pup and a Kahler (how smart was THAT? Have ya seen the prices on these? ). Still...an INCREDIBLE guitar. That was back when I was playing the Adrian Belew stuff and whammying like crazy. I stupidy sold it for $350 (oh yeah...I had replaced the neck by that point....long story....the poor thing...) when scrambling to may for my Private Stock back in '98. Wish I had it back.

Too true about the short, stubby look which is cool within itself. Can't think of many rockers with them though except for Keith, Pete, Jeff Beck (Yardbirds era), Jimmy Page on the 1st zep album, Mark Gallagher (Raven), Ritchie Kotzen, and Michael Lee Firkins. Teles seem to be the choice of country dudes (and dudettes) and alt/indie types.

About the short stubby bit. I was really reffering to the feel of it rather than the look . Listen to Keiths rythym sound . He uses a open G tuning (amongst others) with only 5 strings. No top E string . Big heavy guage strings . Songs like Start Me Up, Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar, lots of them really . That guitar is pretty much strictly a rythym tool for him . And good rythym player I might add. Good sense of timing . Plays all around the beat with marvelous results . We all know he's not a lead player but an excellent rythym player . Anyhoos the Tele can do many things, dont discard it as just a country guitar .

pluto, YES! Robben Ford is a tele guy. I think he plays them almost as much as his two hum guitars. If you have any of his Jing Chi stuff or his solo albums like Handful Of Blues or Blue Moon there's lots of tele "ca chink" sound on there. AND, don't think they can't do the high gain thing. Kotzen proves what teles with traditional pickups can do through high gain amps.
I think what's neat about strat style guitars vs. tele style guitars is their exact opposite pickups. MY PERSONAL OBSERVATION is that teles have great lead pickups and weak neck pickups. Strats just the opposite. YMMV.
Isn't Kotzen's tele a little hot rodded though? I think his guitar is maple capped and he uses one of those twin bladed dimarzios in the 1st position. I guess I could always hot rod this guitar by ripping out the pickups and putting something like a duncan little 59 in the bridge and a duncan stack in the neck (or a tm3 or m1 if I wanted to stay with TAG pickups).

I think I can agree with that. BUT, I do like the rhythm sound on the Black Crowes first two CDs and that is a lot of tele through Marshalls or HiWatts with quite a bit of gain. It's all good
Hmm, I can't say I listened to anything from the black crowes. I'll give it a listen. The Zep DVD really showed how aggressive Page sounds with the les paul compared to the clips when he plays the tele (although I'm not even sure he's playing a Marshall on the Denmark Radio show).

I think I remember reading somewhere that Hendrix used a Tele on Purple Haze. If I'm remembering right, when they put the band together they were going to do a 4 piece and Noel Redding originally auditioned as a second guitarist...Hendrix liked him and decided to ask him to play bass when they decided on doing a trio. And the Tele Jimi used was Noel's.
I have to say I was in the camp of writing off Teles as country guitars till the singer in the band I play in gave me one on an "indefinite loan." VERY versatile, great rock tones on the bridge with the tone rolled off a bit, great blues tone, and obviously nails the county twang...kind of does it all well. And the crazy thing is it's a stock American Standard! I thought for sure I'd have to at least replace the pu's but they actually sound good with my rig. I think part of the mojo is that body shape in Ash with maple a neck.
Anywho...thought I would ad to the Tele thread.

One of the best guitars I've ever had/played was a custom shop Tele Plus with Lace Sensors that I bought 2nd hand. Unbelievable tone and played like butter. But then I moved to Czech Republic and Fenders were obnoxiously rare there. A music store randomly offered me twice what I paid for it. I said no, and they kept going up until it was about 3x what I paid, when I accepted. To this day I still wish I hadn't done it, that was a great guitar. Of course, it helped me buy, in part, my first Andy, so all's well that ends well I suppose...

Round of applause for Barry!!!!
Teles may not be as easy to play as your humbucker-equipped guitar (no slam on the Drop Top/Cobra/Atom players - I want an Atom and a DT), but the rewards are plentiful. Namely - TONE!!! Take guys like Bill Kirchen, Jim Campilongo, and Redd Volkaert whose basic set-ups are: tele/cord/amp and hear all the sounds they get. They'll make you wanna just give up.
I love teles. When i gig I usually have a tele,a Strat and a humbucker guitar usually my Les Paul but lately been using my new cobra instead of the LP since its new to the family and I'm becoming acquainted with it . All these guitars have specific uses and contributions to songs in our set list . One thing i notice alot in these threads are players automatically assuming they need to change the stock pickups for usually some pickup thats much hotter . My question is simple . Why ? To me its like they are missing the point of it . I suggest sticking with the stock pickup and tweaking the tone knob on the guitar and certainly on your amp . The sweet spots are usually there you just have to find them .

I hate stock true single coils. I thought the stock pickups were pretty good (TV1 and TV3) on the hollow T, but I hate the hum and would definitely put in the M series pickups or even Duncans if I were to buy the guitar.

Yes single coils have that 60 cycle hum but if you think you can change them out for some hum cancelling type you will also be losing the sound of a true single coil . Hum cancelling single coil pups just dont have the same sound . You do give up something there . Your issue is the hum , fair enough , but I can get by that .

The Suhr backplate almost entirely kills 60 cycle hum for singles that are within it's specified range without changing the pickup tone. I highly recommend it. The screw holes don't line up with the Anderson pickguard. . only the two screws farthest from the headstock will fit without putting new holes in the backplate.

That's quite okay. :) That's alright thought-even if I got a fantastic deal on a brand new 5 year old guitar, I would have to change the pickups to the M pickups (125 a piece=250 bucks), get a new pickguard (60 bucks) and get the local tech to take out the vintage voicing (minimum 50 buck job I assume). After adding all that up, a fantastic deal looks less like a fantastic deal.

Gotta chime in - no flack from me. I did a sideman gig with an artist last night, and borrowed a Tele with Fralins to use as a 'backup' guitar, since my usual backup, a humbucker-loaded Strat (sadly, not an Andy) was in for refretting.
After rehearsal, the Tele ended up being the only guitar I used all night. We did eighteen songs and they covered a lot of ground - gritty bluesy stuff (Fulldrive II) to rock (Tube Zone) to light jazzy stuff (no overdrive) and even a little clean slide.
That Tele kicked it on every chart. There wasn't a sound I was going for that I couldn't get. Of course, some of that was 'new toy' syndrome - I did enjoy the change.
And Joe (Getgo), if you see this, Travis Brant played drums. That guy is fun.
