Well... it's constant evolution, but this is getting extremely close if not there!
Cool thing is, it's my father's birthday 07-23!

Thanks! It's actually a Cobra S. The pickups are H1-/M1-/H2. As I noted, there's a bit of evolution here. Started out playing a DT, moved to HC, then a HT and then a HDTC. Then one day I picked up a Cobra in a trade and really liked the short scale and the instrument overall. And I was also learning what I liked and found useful in the guitars. I play in a church band where song styles can run the spectrum.
That led to ordering a Cobra with a trem and medium frets. I've played this instrument for nearly a year. It has an H1-/H2 pickup combination. Of course the neck and bridge sounds by themselves are great. I found the combination tone to be pretty cool, especially when the pickups were split. It really thinned out the sound and with a bit of chorus and delay, well, I'm back in the 80's. Yes, our worship leader likes to pull a few songs out with that "style".
I did find though that I was wanting a bit more of a "strat" sound from the guitar. I was looking for an all around guitar that would cover everything. So, I ordered this guitar with the M1- in the middle. Roy was actually the one that suggested the M1- and I must say, it was a great advice. The M1- does not split, but it sounds really good with the humbuckers split or unsplit. It's given me the sounds I was looking for.
Normally, I haven't found the middle pickup sound by itself used that much, mainly it's there to use in combination with the neck or bridge (for me). But this M1- has got some great tone to it and I think I may have just changed my thoughts about not using the middle pickup by itself now. This is my first experience with the M family and I'm really liking it.

thanks Noah. that Roy does give good advice doesn't he?! ;)
Again sweet Cobra. I've been eyeing the M's for quite sometime, but had not thought of the H/M/H configuration. I too have the H1-/H2+ in my Cobra's. And miss the "quackiness" of the single coils, but have always rationalized that by saying "just p/up your classic". But if you're going w/ one axe, it sure would be cool to get a convincing strat tone out of the short neck-mahogany body. Sounds like that middle M is allowing that SRV tone to shine through? :p (oh, and FWIW, I too am a Medium fret lover!)

For me, adding the middle M gave the guitar more versatility in addition to the stock tones I like from a Cobra. I don't know about SRV tone, but definitely what I was looking for.

sweet! thanks Noah. By "more than stock tone" are saying that you can get "close" to a P90-ish tone?

Perhaps a better word would have been "standard" tones as opposed to "stock". I believe there is more of a P90-ish tone when the pickups are run in parallel, these are in series. Now that might be another interesting switching arrangement I hadn't thought of!

oh yeah. I love discovering new combinations. I think that's why I consider the switcheroo system such a killer option. But that's another thread! :p :D
Very nice looking guitar!
