View Full Version : Deep Ocean Blue question?

I know, each guitar is different, and different wood takes stain differently. BUT, which one of these is closest to true Deep Ocean Blue? Does Deep Ocean have green in it like Bora Bora and Deep Bora Bora??

Thanks, as usual!

Andy

PS--Thanks to Jay for posting these photos of his Ex guitars!

Definitely the first one. I used to own a Deep Ocean Blue Hollow Cobra S that I still can't believe I sold. Anyway, it's a dark blue, very similar to PRS's whale blue color. IMO, it hides too much of the nice quilt or flame.

Also-I think the first one is not truly indicative of how it looks in person. The flash or lighting in that picture makes it look less dark than it really looks IMO. I know when JoeB63 bought my cobra s, he was surprised that it was darker than the pics.

OK, so is the guitar DARKER in person than the one in this photo (on the right)??

on this computer the darker one looks real. on the mac at home it looked more like deep bora.

The darker one in the two guitar photo? That's what I based my love of Deep Ocean Blue on--Whale Blue, give or take.

You think the cream pickup rings are too PRS tom??

True! But I'm talking quality guitars here!

Can I buy a set creme rings, to swap em if I want (I believe my order says black rings)?

sure. yes. sure.

IMO, the creme colored p/u rings look best on deep ocean blue. Black rings will make the guitar look too dark. Contrast is nice

The guitar on the right looks exacty like deep ocean blue on my computer. To really see the quilt or flame detailed pattern on that color, you really need a flash or light because it's such a dark color. I forgot too, that my cobra s had a burst too, so it looked even darker.

I love the darker true blue. And a burst would be too dark--with the black edges and all.

Sticking with Deep Ocean!! I'm getting an all-maple neck/board, so that will lighten up the overall look a bit! Now I just have to wait 4 months or so!!

After months of my questions, Tom and Roy might send me a Deep Ocean Blue pipe-bomb!

The one on the right is DOB, and agreed, the flash definitely makes it lighter in that solo shot. It is pretty dark in normal lighting and on stage. To me, I saw the guitar more as the color in the double shot. The one on the left is Bora Bora Blue, and it is much lighter with a hint of green to it.

While we all obsess over the details of a custom ordered TAG, it is important to remember that each plank of wood will take stain differently. And natural vs. artificial light plays with your perceptions.

You take your best guess and let Tom and Co. do their magic.

I agree. I went with age white covers to get some contrast on my bora bora burst Drop Top. In all but the brightest lighting conditions, there wasn't enough contrast with the black pickups.

Awsome, thanks for the link! THAT's the color guitar I want! Don't like the tight, thin flames, but that color rocks! Not sure between the black and cream rings, but I can always switch them out easy enough.

That Cobra is really happy with the Creme Pickup rings that are now installed on it.

If I get time I may take a shot of it and post it in the next few days.

I actually own the DT in the bottom of the first pic you sent. It is actually the same as the first pic. I was shocked too when I opened the case, I thought it would be closer to Bora Bora, but it is dark blue....still like it mind you, however; I would really like a little green in it to show contrast...
(btw, the Duncan and EVH are gone and it is back to original :)

sounds like we could all use a litle blue clarity.
from lightest to darkest.
1. bora bora-a light tourquoise with light blue and light green tones.
2. trans blue-a pure blue, not green, not purple
3. arctic blue- shades of grey and blue, stonewashed if you will. usually darker on quilt than flame.
4. deep ocean- not greenish, a deep dark blue.
all can be done with or without a burst. the burst tends to make any of them look a bit darker.
hope that helps.

You forgot Jack's Blue! Between Trans and Deep Ocean maybe?

tom

yes jack's blue is about the same darkness as trans blue, but has more color variation because it is a stain right on the wood. it does not lean towards green, maybe just a little towards purple.

Interesting! So there's a different staining process for different colors? If Jacks Blue is put on the wood, how are the other blues done?

Deep Ocean Blue Burst

Wow!!!! Love that color.
I can see another Atom in my future with it. Fantastic. ;)

I never thought blue made sense in a burst, since most bursts are sunbursts--earth tones. A blue guitar stands on it's own, without having a burst around the edges.

That said, deep ocean burst is one sweet looking color!

As promised Deep Ocean Blue with Creme bits.

In the shade and then in the sun. Sorry bout the reflections but these TAG's are just too darn shiny :-)

Very cool! I think the cream rings look great on the darker blue guitars. Plus, since I will have a maple board, the cream rings will bring it all together a bit more than the black. But, I will have a set of both, knowing how I change my mind!

That can't be right -- I own that Cobra S, but I didn't buy it from you. I bought your HDTC and then traded it with Joel M. for the Cobra S. Joel bought the Cobra from you. And since Joel lives near me, we did an in-person trade.

Doesn't really matter, I'm just setting the record straight. I suppose it was Joel who was surprised that the Cobra S was darker than the pics.

Ah yes, sorry for the mixup. I forgot that you guys swapped two of my guitars! For the record, Joel thought it was darker than the pics. BTW-how are you and Joel doing? I haven't seen you guys on any forums in a long time.

I haven't heard from Joel in a while. But I'm good. Lots of gigs with 2 bands and practicing my butt off here at home lately. That Cobra S is my only TA these days, but I'd love a new Hollow T if someone's got one they want to part with cheap (or free! ;) ). I still love the Cobra S and play it's my guitar of choice for all gigs with the Motown/soul band.

Thanks for asking.
