View Full Version : Floyd Rose/Cobra?

I'm contemplating a new guitar with a floating Floyd Rose on it. Is it possible to get a Cobra with a Floyd on it? I remember hearing about mahogany necks bending too much and fretting out. Does this happen when doing dive-bombs, or in more subtle usage? I generally want to use the Floyd for gentle vibrato in both directions on chords and maybe a bit of the Jeff Beck slide sounding stuff.

This is a subject that has been covered before on several threads. Tom is not comfortable with the strength of mahogany when it comes to the Floyd. Seen too many headstock breaks in his day.
I too longed for a Floyded Cobra...closest you can get is the Drop Top T. There are two available at Anderson Alley...one of them mine.

Does a mahogany body work well with a Drop Top T?

The mahogany/maple combo is timeless IMHO. The main difference b/t the Cobra and DTT is obviously scale length and neck wood. It doesn't sound or feel exactly like a Cobra b/c of that. It is a unique and different beast. Not better or worse, just different.
BTW, I've heard several Pro Am Ts with solid mahogany. They are dark and heavy. My #1 guitar is a PAT with a maple neck, which seems to really brighten up the top end compared to a rosewood.

In the past I have ordered several Drop Top's with mahogany bodies - all have worked out quite well.
If you're thinking Floyd, go with a Drop Top T mahogany/maple. That will get you close to the taboo Cobra-Floyd combo.

Do you recommend a rosewood on maple neck for a mahogany/maple drop top t?

I finally did the search for "cobra AND floyd". . sorry for beating the dead horse! :)
Would a cobra with an all rosewood neck and a floyd be stable and doable? I love the short scale on my Atom. . .
I just happen to know a certain Dave K with a Cobra with an all rosewood neck that I need to check out again and do the Pepsi Challenge with an Atom. :)
Also, I'm contemplating picking up a junker with a Floyd just to see if I really want one on an Anderson. Anyone know of any ~$600 guitars with Floyds that aren't completely garbage? :) Last time I had a Floyd was 15 years ago on a cheapo Kramer.

Floyd Rose actually has a line of guitars out. I'm sure you've seen them. A little funky but definitely in your price range. Gotta deal with the speedloader strings though.

I'm constantly amazed by the entry level Ibanez stuff. Not a Floyd exactly, but for $500 this one looks sweet...

Good luck. I think everyone should have at least one Floyd in the collection.

I'm not so sure that's a good idea. We'll both leave with GAS pains. ;)

Thanks!
That actually reminds me that they have a new line of import Floyd Rose models that use OFR instead of the speedloader. Sweeeet.

it would work. still not sure we will do that though. we have tried to consistantly not do things that muddy the waters between models. i can say from experience that the rosewood neck sounds very different from a mahogany neck. let me ponder that for a bit.

Cool. I'll try to check out Dave K's rosewood-necked Cobra soon to see how it sounds in case you guys decide that it is a okay idea.

Dave K,
That one is interesting... Looks like someone modded that Cobra to a trem after it was produced/sold.... no locking nut, and not the sunken/recessed "Original" Floyd's we use at Tom's.
What's that one's story?

WAIT... My eyes are playing tricks on me.... The way the light is reflecting in the pic makes it look funny....
That's not a trem after all huh?
Nevermind!!!

Nope, it's a stock hardtail Cobra.
I do have a DTC with a Floyd that needs a refret with jumbo SS wire, if you happen to know anyone. ;)

I hear there is this dude somewhere in California named Bruce that does an AWESOME job with refrets. It's even better to send it to him to do a refret than to have the guys at Pacific Music here in Redmond do it. They were pretty cool when they drilled extra holes in my strat for no reason. It's a good thing I don't like that guitar anymore anyways since the Andy addiction began.
