Here's the story:
Six months ago I went in to Guitar Center to have lunch with a buddy of mine who's an Ops Mgr. and I happened upon a Les Paul Special. It was used and they'd had it on the wall since the store opened that morning. It was such a cool color that it caught my eye and I pulled it down to play it. The color is a split between charcoal grey and money green with a hint of sparkle, and the p-90's and knobs are black. It just looks rock n' roll. I bought it on impulse, because of that rock n' roll vibe, and have been playing it regularly ever since. It has the Gibson Custom Shop logo on the back of the headstock and the serial # starts with "CS", so I figured I'd just call Gibson and see what ws so "custom" about this guitar. Gibson told me that they had no detailed records of Custom Shop orders but that they knew it was made in '99. I just assumed it was this captivating money green color.
Skip ahead to last night. After watching Rockstar:SuperNova, I was inspired to go out to the garage (where my rig is set up this week) and play a little. When my wife came out to see if I wanted to watch a movie, I powered down, unplugged, and turned off all of the lights. As I'm walking back into the house, my wife says, "heh. that's pretty neat", and I wasn't sure what she was talking about because it was pitch black outside. I looked down and this Les Paul I've been playing for 6 months.
wait for it...
Glows.
In.
The.
Dark.
* and to think, I'm supposed to take delivery of my new Cobra Special tomorrow- which was supposed to replace the LP. How do you get rid of a guitar that glows in the dark?

I'm equally afraid if the one who did the Evanescence song. She seems like the type to giggle while she's killing you in your sleep.

I haven't decided if I like that show yet or not (didn't watch it last season). I almost wish for the version without Tommy Lee and friends, without any talking, and without the singers. Yup, that leaves the backing band. :)

the aussie dude has talent but mr. iceland leaves me cold ;) ... i'm convinced the 'burning ring of fire' chick is either a satanic cult member or a trans mistress dominatrix ... where do they get some of these people?

The House Band and Brooke Burke are the only reasons I watch.
Rafael Moreira has TONE TONE TONE. Makes me want a Shiva again. But then, I don't have his chops so there's that.

I actually thought she did an awesome job in changing up the song a bit. Too many folks have covered it exactly like Johnny Cash. I twas a nice twist. Something tells me she will be one of the final contestants.

The old joke was that this song resulted after Johnny got his Ben Gay mixed up with his Preparation H.
I could be wrong, though....

First off just caught it last night. Not bad. Kept thinking I had saw Jill Gioia before then realized she was the same one that tours with the west coast version of thhe Trans Siberian Orchrasta and also sings on the cd's. Thought she redemed herself, because that girl can sing.
Next back to the original thread. Any pictures while it is glowing. That would be a really cool thing at church with are lights. :D

So, C: what are your thoughts on the radioactive Gibby and the new Cobra?

the new Cobra Special is cool. It's not as nasally as the Gibby (and of course it doesn't glow in the dark). And nothing plays like an Anderson.
Tonight is the first gig with the Cobra, so we'll see how she likes the stage.
I'm shooting pics of the Gibson this weekend so it can go ebay early next week.

After a gig with the Cobra. She LOVES the stage. There's a real smoothness that comes out of this guitar. It's really the first time I've ever felt like I could get that Landau tone, where it's relatively high gain, but there's a vocal quality to it that makes it pleasing to listen to. And the middle position is my favorite for those woody, jazzy tones.
The downfall is that a Les Paul looks like rock n' roll. When you sling the guitar low, get in that wide-legged stance, and crush people's skulls, it looks more appropriate with a Les Paul than with a clean, classy, tele-shaped piece of art. But, in all honesty, there are few situations where I need to crush skulls, and most of the singer/songwriter types in L.A. are not into skullcrushing- and the churches I play at would probably frown upon the crushing of skulls, so... Anyway, the Cobra Special is more refined in it's presentation. It has a sophistication in it's looks, where the Les Paul Special looks like euro-garage-band weaponry.
In terms of playability, there's really no comparison. In terms of tone, the Cobra Special is more versatile and has less of that nasal quality that I mentioned earlier. The Paul is louder (more resonant) when not plugged in, and the Cobra in the neck position is extremely dark with these P-90's- for the first time, I can see the benefit in using a treble booster. But beyond those two little quibbles, I was really inspired last night while playing this guitar. I was the guy who was noodling through sound check, and noodling through take-downs, and noodling through chart fixes, and noodling through all of the MD's reprimands. Yup... I was that guy last night. :)
All in all, I give the Cobra Special a hearty thumbs up, an Editor's Pick award, A Grammy, and my hand in marriage. We'll see how long the honeymoon lasts.

Het Guitarzan, do you suppose if we "mated" ours we would come out with a baby P90 Atom Special?

hmmmm. I think we'd have to talk with Dr. Tom about that one. The Anderson catalog says that the CS is the perfect guitar for him, but that was pre-Atom. I'm wondering what the future holds for Atom variations.
i am a comfirmed atom special guy these days. 2 pickups and a bigsby.

I'm sure you've tried it- what's the verdict on two P-90's in an Atom?
m1 and ho2 these days.
have not done p90s in an atom. the problem i have with p90s is that the two mounting screws being in the middle of the pickup don't allow for an angling og the pickup bass to treble wise. also with the neck angle on the atom, you can't adjust the pickup parallel to the strings. then there's the polepieces being too narrow a spacing for the bridge position. then there's the hum that lots of people say they can live with but then really can't. so, lots of little stuff that adds up to too much little stuff. i keep looking for p90 covers with no holes so i could mount it and space it like i want. no luck so far.

What about this Atom special that had 2 M's in it was it anything like the p90 sound or better.
