I had an educational experience a couple weeks back when my guitar went silent in the middle of a song at a gig. In an attempt to get things working, I plugged my guitar (HDP T with H-S-S PUPs) direct into amp (Savage Rohr 15). I got my signal back and finished the night controlling my tone with the guitar's controls.

Result: great tone and improved playing!!!! To compensate for the loss of my OD pedals, I cranked up the amp and reduced guitar volume. For solo's I opened up the guitar volume and left fly.

But best of all, with all that gear out of the way, I was more able to connect with the music. I found I was manipulating the music instead the tools.

Anyway, I have decided to downsize my pedalboard. I think gonna shrink it down to a FDII and a teese RMC2. My nifty boutique chorus, delay, OD and Octaver pedals can stay home.

Dancing around the fingerboard (and around the stage) is much better than dancing on your pedalboard. I'm a changed man.

Has anybody else had similar or contrasting experiences?

we call that old school where i come from. the only thing i had between my guitar and amp growing up was my cable. i have recently shrunken my pedalboard as well and am enjoying it.

I like this idea, but it terrifies me. I have made two (2) excuses to accommodate and dismiss this fear.

#1: my strat has a crappy volume knob that goes waaayyy dark unless it's all the way up.

#2: as a sideman, I'm less able to just have "my sound" and stick with it. I have to sound like whatever the hiring party wants me to sound like.

I DREAM of the day when I don't need an ego rig to pad my playing ability.

a new volume pot would not be as expensive as a few pedals 'zan ;)

you're telling me it's JUST the pot and not some fancy-shmancy proprietary Anderson wiring trick?

it's a pot and a resister and cap on the pot. that will get you reasonbly equal tone as you turn down.

I'm definitely old school.
My rig has always been super simple.I prefer it that way.
My rig now is guitar-Mogami 15' cable-Thomas Organ Crybaby-Mogami 15'-Two-Rock 18 watt Ruby or Two-Rock 50 watt Custom.That's it.The rest is in the hands,attack,vol & tone knobs.

Why do you need the pot? Can't you just install the cap/resistor on the existing hardware?
