View Full Version : Suhr SSL system on a Classic?
Hey Tom et al.
Have you guys tried putting the SSL on a VA equipped Classic yet? I'm generally displeased with noiseless SC's but this system may be a salvation for many of us. Please, fill me in if I've missed anything or if you have tried this!

check out this (http://andersonforum.com/board/showthread.php?t=2247&highlight=suhr) thread.
thanks bro...I heard that John had given a SSL backplate system to Tom and that he was testing it. Just wondering if that's true or not.
john sent us one of the backplate models. we're going to give it a listen. what we hear or don't hear will determine what happens next.

That's great news! I'm anxious to hear your results.
yes by all means let us know. I'd love to get this put on my Classic if it works :)

$325 retail?
It's a bit more than buying, say, a virtual vintage set from DiMarzio but it's also new technology that no one else is putting out AND (in theory) could be used with vintage SC's or any other SC to maintain tone without the noise. I'll pay $325 for that in a heartbeat!
i think retail is 300, and you would need to change out the rwrp middle pickup. the install doesn't look too bad, but it could take close to an ahour to dial it in. still don't know how it will work with the va2. it is outside the systems normal impedance match.
hrmmm....I wish I had known that just a couple of weeks ago. I really think this is a great idea and from what I can tell it's just great. If it comes to me buying one of these buying the pickups won't be a big deal. Do let us know if it works with the VA2 though...

Is it out of range for SA1? Or split H2?
split they are both in range.

split they are both in range.
What about split SD1?
If the BPSSC works well with the pickups that are in the right impedance range, I may want to get one for my Drop Top. Any thoughts about how well it would work with S/S/H switcheroo/vintage voicing wiring? I'd actually be willing to make the stacked singles only have two positions, off and split, if that makes it easier.
it's all speculation at this point. until i hear it the way it was designed to work it's pretty impossible to say how it will work in less than optimal situations.
any idea when you guys will get one to check out Tom?

should have rephrased that. I meant:
Do you know when you will get to check one out? As in, how long untill you let us know :)

Yes! I'm very anxious to hear about this! My Atom is kicking my Drop Top's butt, so the drop top needs some ammo. :)

I read in another thread that you like the M1- pickups a lot. Did you put some in your Atom? How do they sound in that guitar?

They sounds great in my Atom! I like them quite a bit more than M1, although it was quite a bit of time between hearing them, so I can't say that I really did an A/B test.
The Atom got jumbo frets at the same time, which I love too.
Just a bump to see if there has been any testing of this I'm not aware of :)
we did talk about it on another thread. it worked very nicely on VA1's. you do need to replace the reverse middle pickup. it is way less effective on the hotter sounds of the va12 and 23.

Another bit of info. . the Suhr back plate is pretty far from matching an Anderson back plate. Suhr is attempting to make one for me that will work with the Anderson back plate convention. I should hopefully know something soon about this. If you use the existing Suhr back plate on an Anderson, I think only two screws fit. Tom mentions this in another thread.
I'll let you know when I get it installed, although the results might not help you very much since I'm using Suhr pickups. I waited for a while to hear what Anderson pickups would work and gave up before hearing that VA1 worked well.
I'm nearly done with the rewire that make it easier to install the back plate and also makes the individual pickup switches for the switcheroo 2 position instead of 3.
