I've been working on transcribing tunes off old records. Obviously these guys weren't using the Feiten thing. It is driving me absolutely insane hearing my guitar against their's when playing along and figuring out parts.

Is there any way to defeat the Feiten tuning? Seriously.

so you like the sound of 2 guitars out of tune better than one? intonate normally and you can be out of tune with them.

Actually, in this case, yes. I want to be closer to being as out of tune as they are. So, just doing my intonation in equal temperament should be pretty close even with the nut moved forward?

Thanks.

Intonating back to standard is such a small amount I dought it will make a differnce.. I bet you aren't 100% in tune with the track you are listening to. How are you tuning to the track? Are you using a tuner, then playing with the record? Who's to say the track is tuned spot on? The first Van Halen record is all over the place.... each song is slightly different than the last.. probably because they tuned by ear... that's what I read anyway. Lots of times a record will not be at A 440... is your turntable spot on? Too many variables.

I wouldn't re intonate the guitar... just tune with your ear.

I was also disepointed the first time I tryed Feiten tuning.. I am very sencetive to pitch, and felt that it was all wrong.. but this is because my ears is used to compromice with regular tuning, and when you play a guitar with regular tuning you always adjust a little with your fingers to compensate.. Now I am used with the feiten, and prefer it over my Fender with regular tuning..

All I am saying is that years ago transcribing in my pre Feiten days I didn't notice these things. Just tune up to the record by ear and go. Maybe my ear is just that much better these days but I notice intonation problems everywhere I turn now taking guitar parts off of recordings. It isn't my guitars, it's their's. So, my idea was to try to get closer to them since I can't ask them to go set up their guitars and try it again. :p ;)

I've been using Feiten for years on Anderson and Suhr guitars and I fought intonation on older guitars just like everyone else. So, if anything, transcribing highlights just how well Feiten and a good set up works compared to guitars without. It sill sounds weird though.
