Saw some Applegates at last months Healdsburg Acoustic Fest.
Here's a tidbit from a Olson owner to confirm your comment of "Olson influence"-

"Applegate learned from James, and had his necks built by James till he bought his own CNC machine (James CNCs his neck since he had to have reconstructive surgery shoulder after carving 800 necks...couldn't lift his arm for the better part of a year). His bracing pattern is slightly different but the sound and feel is awesome."

Coincidently while browsing at the Applegates guitar booth, Mr Olson happened to be there chatting with Brian. :)
