Can't remember ever seeing a plain top Cobra? Anybody have one? Pics?
we've only done the plain tops on guitars that get sparkle or solid color tops. i used one on my new hollow atom but it turned out to have nice subtle flames.

Subtle flames, huh? Based on the Classic T I have on order, I don't know nuthin' 'bout subtle (hot rod) flames. Thanks Tom!
Mine is fairly plain:

Another thread spins out of control before it even gets started.
I thought the Primavera was fairly plain, but it was a Cobra Special (making it not count as a plain top Cobra).
Did order one special for a dude that wanted a simi-plain top, don't have a picture though. Roy might remember better than I.

Painting it a solid color kinda nullifies the plain top, no?
I'm thinking sunbursts mostly.

Sunburst, Tobacco or Natural's; that would be the ticket for a nice plain top.....yes?
Painted solid would fall in line with Special's I feel.
I'm a big fan of the plain top; my 6120 was supposed to be a plain until sweet-Roy surprised me (as he's done soooo many times before. He's such a great guy).
My original '59 was a plain, and I loved it so (and I would still have it if it wasn't for the constant need for money to live, etc...).

Why, yes I do. And I believe it's about to make a Spotlight debut.

OK, let's put the wheels back on. Maple tops over mahogany only. Like a nice '58. That's a plain top. All of these guitars are bee-you-tea-full, but not my orignal intent.
Not a fan of this company's current work (or CEO for that matter), but this is what I'm talking about...

I can't be the first one to think of this. C'mon, where are my plain toppers? :)
that looks like plain eastern maple. people just don't ask us for it. if you order it, it will come.
between plain and fancy west coast maple, no change in sound. i will say that quilt is usually softer than flame, but we're talking small differences here. eastern maple is harder and would have a harder top end. we don't use any eastern maple for tops.

Any difference in retail price for a truly plain top looking about like the one on the Les Paul pictured in this thread? Eastern, Western, as long as it is actually plain. ;) What do I specify on the order to get a truly plain top?
I may just order a HDTC plain top with a Swamp Ash back and a one piece maple neck instead of a Classic. I owned a couple like this with fancy tops but there is something more comfortable about a not so flashy looking guitar as far as taking it out, to me anyway. I loved the tone of those guitars, just got tired of the over the top look. I was thinking Tobacco Burst with no binding so the seam is kind of hidden under the dark edge of the burst.
it's $100 less. if you want really plain, not one spec of figure, you'll need to say that. otherwise it will get a top with some figure, but not enough to be called "figured. these usually go on sparkle tops or solid colors.

Definetly really plain, not one spec of figure. Would a top like that in Tobacco Burst come off really glossy and flashy like this...

Or more mellow and aged looking like this solid Alder finished Classic...

I would prefer the more mellow, aged look front and back if that is possible. I like the vintage styling but want the tone of the maple and hollow ash body. :D
Thanks!
a plain top won't have the shiny grain like the figured top, but it will have the brighter yellow color of the figured top. the one on the bottom is alder, which is browner to start with.

Thanks Tom! The backing wood will actually be Swamp Ash but I couldn't find an example of a Swamp Ash Classic with that finish to post. I would imagine Swamp Ash to be a little less brown in the middle.
I'll be emailing my dealer shortly!
the yellow center on ash will be very much like yellow on maple.

Hmmmmm....the one on the left is sorta plain :D

The HDTC on the right is maple over swamp ash....
The Cobra is maybe the best guitar I've ever owned. Really.
