I love these guitars from this era. I have a few questions. How many Pro ams were made with the bowling ball finish between the s-head era till 1990?

No offense but I like my 87 Pro Am better than any new TA I have played, I understand the new ones are overall better wood quality but I love the st**t head and the pickups on my 87. I have a 88 on the way...

Anyways down to the questions:
Can I still get pickup covers for these guitars I need a full set?
My 87 has a blue bowling ball finish and it has a red jewel where the fourth switch should be, there is also no middle pickup but a piece of black foam cut in the shape of a pickup and a logo on it just like the pickup covers..
It looks factory but is this stuff original or did someone do this aftermarket, I still love the guitar.

Why are the dots an orange color, I heard they were clay, what is the purpose of this?

Last but not least if anyone has one of these pro ams for sale or knows were one is in the bowling ball finish, Please let me know.

By the way my 87 blue bowling ball finish pro am was the one on Ebay. I think the reason there are only three switches on it is because it does not have a middle pickup. I can post pics if needed

Thanks to Tom Anderson for making such kick butt guitars.

Glad you found the guitar(s) for you. Not a lot of people can say that. I just sold my 1990 grandam lam to upgrade to something newer. Part of me hopes I don't regret the decision.

Anyway, you mentioned pics, I'd like to see 'em. Post'em up. And if you need someone to host them for you, let me know.

Thanks,

Dave

What was the difference between the Pro Am & the Grand Am ? I have an old Grand Am ( 11-11-88 ), and yes I like the old Headstock as well :D

Grand Am was solid figured maple or lacewood. Pro am was basswood, alder, swamp ash or mahogany. Grand Am Lam was a pro am with a laminated figured wood top, but no forearm contour.

If you go the Forum Homepage and click on the 1988 Catalog link there are full descriptions (and pictures) of the Grand Am Lam, Grand Am and Pro Am.

drum roll please....here's the tally.
these were made between '88-91
black/white=43
gold/black=16
blue/black=32
red/black=12
red/white=6
purple/black=5
blue/white=5
sparkle red/black=1
silver/black=1
burgundy mist/black=1
green/white=1
p blue/black=1 don't remember what p blue means?
and the one and only striped african flag with black bowling ball on top for kendall of fishman, it had a solid pf neck too!
the dots are micarta, same as now. they changed the formulaabout 10 years ago maybe more. the older stuff was more sucepable to conditions like smoke, so it changed color more than the new stuff.
the pickups, if you're talking about ultrasonics, are molded, the cover is not removeable.

I will post pics shortly.
Also what is the difference between a black logo and a white logo on the headstock. My 87 has a white logo with ultra sonic pickups and my 88 that is on its way to me has a black logo with the non covered pickups.
Also can I get a set of those covered ultra sonic pickups??

By the way the red jewel does not light up in any way on the guitar it is just covering the area were there should be a switch. Its on there real nice and it does look like it could be stock. Tom? did you by chance have any jewels (plastic ones) laying around the shop that you may have put on a guitar in 87???

nope we didn't do the jewel. ultrasonics were made in germany and i haven't seen them for years.

the decals were chosen based on which one showed up the best on the colored headstock.
