View Full Version : NAMM 2005 - The ATOM is THE BOMB BAYBEEEE!!! ;P

OK, I flew back into LA on Friday PM PST, and rushed over to TAG.

tom, Roy, Laurie, Rachel and Chuck (who I saw on Saturday) epitomize graciousness, receptiveness, friendliness and bring an overall warm vibe to an otherwise chaotic event (or perhaps "circus" is a more appropriate characterization). Whatever you call it, hanging at the TAG booth is like coming home - it's familiar, it's comfortable and there are tons of guitars!! ;P

Before I go into my gushing review, tom, Laurie, Roy and Rachel were NOT in their usual Main Hall "home" by Tien Lawrence & Co. In order to mitigate the incessant and recurring "noise" fatigue that usually strikes after the first 8 hours of day1, TAG migrated to the lower level of the Convention Center.

'Know what? It's less noisy! Again, forsight by tom, resulted in a better NAMM show experience for all involved...AND most importantly, an unencumbered debut for the ATOM! (We could actually hear the guitar sans extraneous noise!)

The ATOM. Wow.

She's beautiful. She's balanced. She's toneful. She's resonant. She's sporting a new 2 bolt, extra tight, neck joint. She punches like an LP and quacks like a tele on steroids. AND she's getting back ordered already!!

Let's get one thing straight. If you want a 'Paul (Les or Reed Smith), buy one. If you want an original looking, mahogany single cut, w/ the build-quality AND tonality that only TAG can deliver, look no further. She's here. I'm waiting for the TACo neck carve, but the Cobra standard carve was SAAAAAA-MOOOOOOTH. Hey, I'll even say that playing through the MB Lone Star, I realized that this box can honk like a BF Fender. (trying to do Wolf Hoffmann lix, well let's just say that that tone will never be in there).

But I digress...

Oh, the other neat debut was what tom referred to as "Chinese" Red. BOOM. I LOVE red. And this one did not disappoint. A tad orange, but all Anderson. Roy's referring to it was "Mandarin" or "Szchewuan" (sp?) red. I'll just say that Chuck kicks A$$. Period. I saw this "chinese" red DT, from 50 feet away. NO lie.

Ms. Laurie Berg. Awesome. (and she runs a nice business too! ;P ) Go Cardinals. (wait did I just say that?)

http://members.cox.net/eddyrox/tag2.jpg
Michael: Roy you can sit on my lap.
Roy: maybe.
Michael: c'mon, it's just a picture.
Roy: OK, but is that an ear plug container in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Michael: mmm....I'm just happy to see you!:eek:

http://members.cox.net/eddyrox/tag3.jpg
The ATOM is THE BOMB. She's BAD, and She's NATIONWIDE. Wait, how do play a G chord again? Hey Roy? Roy? Wait, was it something I said? Anyone?

Dr. Stephen Chow AKA Fuzzyguitars. If there ever was ever a dude who could shred on command, this is the man. Oh, and in at his day job he regularly puts back Humpty Dumpty together again. Too bad he went to UCLA for his residency. DOH. :)

Someone say Happy New Year's in Chinese. Bueller? Anyone? Ok... it's Gung Hay Fat Choy. The inflection probably all wrong, but the intent's there. Tombo, Pluto or Steve, throw me a life vest on this one!

more "Mandarin" red, up close. (caveat: Roy/tom/Chuck have not "officially" determined what color to call this one. BUT she's a beaut!!)

I LOVE RED. (so does Sammy H!)

http://members.cox.net/eddyrox/tag8.jpg
ATOM w/ 2 H's. Dark Chery burst. Me like A LOT. And so did everyone else!! :D

One more thing. There were/are 3 ATOMs at the show. The 2 pictured above (the dark Cherry Burst is GoTW) AND a gold top w/ a Bigsby tremolo. Yes!

(and I recognize in the pix, I've left out pronouns, punctuation and in general, not been very coherent. That said, it's probably because I'm so stoked about the new ATOM, that I couldn't write properly. Either way, TAG should be extremely proud of their new baby. She flat out ROCKS.)

Great write up and pics Michael! I believe that as more folks are able
to touch, feel and hear this guitar, Tom and Co. may have difficulty
catching the backlog! The neck joint design simplicity just makes
so much sense.

Will squeeze in a couple more hours at the show before flying back north.
Im a NAMM newbie this year and was just consumed by all
the circus activity on Fri & Sat. Hope to spend some quality time at Toms
area and possibly meet you and other TGF'ers.

The Doc looks happy. ;)

But I'm curious about something else. I'd like to know what the story is WRT the pickups on the natural T in the background. The neck looks like a typical M, but the bridge looks like a new design?? :D

Bless you Michael for sharing your photos with those of us who are dying to see and hear the new ATOM!

Do you have any pics of the ATOM with the Bigsby that you can share with us? That is the one I am excited about for myself.

Thank you again for sharing the great photos and the descriptions!

Hi Dave, unfortunately I ran out of space on the digi-cam. But I can say that the 2 neck screws that hold the neck are w/o a neck plate. Instead there are 2 recessed areas to accomodate the head and washer that comprise the joint. Very smooth, and very, very comfortable. Still a contoured joint, allowing for easy access to the higher neck frets. The date's now on the headstock (along w/ the BFTS logo).

Regarding the neck joint: Looking down onto the back of the ATOM, the screws are set in a quasi-"x" pattern w/o the other 2 points of reference. If you were to draw a box where the normal 4 neck screws would go and draw an "X" to connect the 2 pairs of screws, one of the lines of the "X" would be missing. The pair that would be present would be at about 10 o'clock and at 4 o'clock. The neck "joint" area is no larger than the standard Anderson guitar, as far as I could tell.

Hopefully I didn't confuse what appears to be a very simple, but effective, solution. And one that mates neck to body as tight as I have ever seen. How deep the neck extends into the body, is TBD. Perhaps Roy, tom, Bruce or one the other TAG Forumites could comment? :D

Hi Dave M! That natural T next to the "George Harrison" T (but w/o a solid rosewood body), is an "M" p/up just angled.....I believe. Y'know, I'm so sorry for presenting pics w/o the detail to back it up. ;)

I should've posted these earlier so that I could run back and do the Q&A w/ Roy and tom. Whenever I'm over there, it's like we talk about everything EXCEPT for guitars.

I know that when tom and Roy read through here, they'll chime in an correct all of my inaccuracies! :p (apologies again!)

I believe the bridge pickup is the new m series for Hollow 'T's and the 'T' Classic. I inquired about having an m series installed in the neck of a 'T' Classic and Roy told me about the new m for the bridge. He added that the bridge m will not require a new route. Interesting.

Howdy, apologies again. My camera got loaded w/ pix of Doug Aldrich, Neal Schon, Nuno, Billy Sheehan, Tomo Fujita (MONSTER player and Funk master), Vernon White, Victor Wooten, Craig Chaquico, Chris Impelliteri, Alex Skolnick, Marty Friedman, Rudy Sarzo, John Petrucci, Greg Bisonnette, Nico McBrain, Nick Bowcott, Blues Saraceno, THE Guv'nor, and the 1959SL Handwired head (inside!). This year, Fuzzy and I went nuts, and instead of hunting down new innovative gear (and there wasn't much IMHO), we hunted down 80's hair metal shredmeisters. So at the risk of hijacking the thread, here's my "abridged" NAMM 2005 notes:

Interestingly enough, Line 6 did not have a booth on the main floor, nor on the second floor. Chuck and I went looking (independently) and only found a business meeting area. Hmmmm.....business is clearly very, very good!

Digitech came out with their DS1 (Hothead), TS1 (Bad Monkey), BD1 (Screaming Blues) knock-offs. Very good. For $40 bucks, I'm picking one up. However, you'd think that Digitech would try and at least change the colors! Hothead's orange, the Bad Monkey's green, and the Screamin Blues is what else? Blue!

Robert Keeley had a booth w/ George L, right next to Bogner. The Time Machine Boost was there, but I couldn't try it out, due to the lack of a working amp (at that time). Looks nice (and expensive! :P). A pedal board called "trailer trash" was also making it's debut. It's basically a pedal board covered in tweed, rectifier-ish aluminum, etc. w/ a plexi board upon which the pedals sit. The gimmick is that it's illuminated from underneath. Neat. So neat Vai bought 2 on the spot. Rachel and Guitarzan had to give me the head's up on the "trailer trash" board. Thanks guys!

Taylor came out w/ a new model, the "T5" which Brian Swedferger was demo'ing (AKA Tonelounge). Sweet. It's their electric acoustic, but much thinner (think Chet Akins style). Look for that to be shipping sometime in May/June '05.

Also Fender came out w/ an Eric Johnson signature strat, 3 colors (tobacco burst, red, white). Nice flamed neck, but nothing of EJ's signature on the H/S, only on the neck plate. VERY understated, but devastingly beautiful.

The handwired 100W, 1959 Super Lead is as BAD A$$ as it was anticipated to be. Pure Marshall middy grindage. Bold, tight low mids, crunchy and loud. Absent are the ghosting that appears on a lot of the late 60/early 70 non-MV metal panels. Nick Bowcott said that the street price would be about $2500-2700.  Nice. $2500+ nice? I'll take an ATOM.

Eminence Speakers sponsored a booth w/ 5 cabs, 20 speakers, and a speaker switcher from hell. Each switch triggered a different speaker. WHOA.

Tomo Fujita, Berkelee Prof and jazz funkster extraordinaire, was demo'ing. He'd cop funk voicings through the Tonker speaker and then take off on a jazz run through the Wizard, which made everyone in the room dizzy. What was an added bonus was that Tomo would take questions not only on the Eminence speakers, but give a quasi clinic on amps and jazz/funk technique.

And while Tomo played through a Two Rock Opal, there were Boogies, Marshalls, Randalls, Ashdowns, Bogners, Genz Benz, Peavey, etc. in the room, with each companies' SWAG. The question was which amp company wasn't in that room.

Nick Sterling stepped in while Tomo was on one of his fusion tears, and seemed to be pushed out to the front by the Eminence sales guy to try out the speakers. Man, Tomo was a tough act to follow. Nick Sterling's a very talented protege, but Tomo's chops rival Eric Johson, IMHO. Where EJ's got the country/rock/blues stylings aggregated, Tomo's managed to amalgamate jazz/funk/blues into his own thing. Oh, and Tomo only had a HAO (prototype) booster infront of his Two Rock which was a clean as any Fender BF I've ever heard. Crazy. More talented guitarists in 1 square mile than anywhere on earth for these 4 days.

I also tried out the Peavey JSX. For a 6L6 powered 100W, it's the most modded-Marshall sounding amp I've heard in a long time. I played the new HP Special, successor to the Wolfgang, and sports a 3 on 3 H/S. Sweet guitar and even better amp.

Let me know if you guys want to see anything/anyone - hopefully I've got a pic!

Hey, no prob! I'm more than happy to see all the stuff you've shown. Looks like it's been a blast. :D

I wondered if the pickup was an M, just built around a T bridge frame.

Mike, thanks for the wonderful insight and pics of the NAMM show. It's really cool to see more pictures of the Atom. For those of us that haven't seen it in person we can now see exactly how much the Atom's body is scaled down from the Crowdster shape. I think it looks fantastic.

Thanks for the pics Mike. Makes the rest of us guys who live so far away that much more jealous. That "Chinese" red guitar does look awesome-a little orange mixed with red it seems. Ironic too since Chinese New Year is coming up sometime next month-Hey that would be a good way to introduce Chinese red. Roy, maybe can talk about the monkeys, horses, rats, and the new TAG color!! As for happy new year, I thought the spelling was Kung Hee Fat Choy, but then again, I don't know any Chinese at all.

last tuesday i flew 14 hours & and quite a few time zones from japan to nyc to spend 16 hours of quality time with my wife and daughter. just to get back on a plane and travel 3 time zones and 2800 miles to sunny anaheim, ca, home of the namm show 2005. once there i met up with alf hermida of hermida audio technology (designer of the zendrive & mosferatu pedals) just a great guy. alf & i spent most of the night talking about our expectations for the show, which centered mostly around “the atom.”

finally morning came and after breakfast we were on our way to the show! we figured we’d get to the show 1 hour before the doors opened to the public to claim our badges and quickly get in at 10am. those were our plans and the plans of about 10,000 other people. needless to say we spent approximately 3 hours snaking through the line to claim our badges, but we got there. now we are in and they can’t take us out!

first stop, tag booth. greeted there by tom (supreme commander of the anderson universe), roy (maybe) maybe?, and laurie (administrator extrordinaire). wow! not at the quality or tone of the anderson guitars that we are all accustomed to, but the great people behind the great guitars. their graciousness and attentiveness is beyond what words can say. it was family.

now the atom.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/surielz/AtomCherryBurst.jpg
tom anderson guitarworks atom in cherry burst

with the radar on full field view my eyes close in & lock on a dropdead gorgeous guitar. being the proud owner of a dt, dtc, hdt, htc & cobra i thought tom and the gang had reached guitar building immortality, but once again i was wrong. they have just scratched the surface. kabooooooomm!!!!!!! something explodes in the atomic universe. a guitar of unparalleled beauty and wonder. the atom!!!!!!! all of a sudden i become weak at the knees at the sight of my favorite finish in guitars. cherry burst. tom gently reaches into the glass display case, removes it from its natural setting and gently places it in my hands as a proud father. my eyes gaze up, down and quickly reach the back of the guitar. the beautifully brown tinted mahogany body & neck were impeccable. no contour in the back, but just a gentle tapered edge that gives birth to a beautiful binding. the neck joint in one word “immoveable.” this new 2-bolt design without neckplate is truly unique & innovative. the single cut-away body style makes it easy and fun to navigate the higher frets. the new body design is just lovely. it is much smaller than what i had imagined, making it just so comfortable and what i like to call form-fitting in relation to the body. it is a very balanced design, the neck does not outweigh the body and the body does not outweigh the neck. weighing in at an astronomically light 7.25 lbs i need an all-night gig with this baby strapped on. now roy (maybe) maybe? challenged me to put it on a strap. oh my God!!! what an awesome feeling. a star is born. with the atom there is no more faking it till you make, you have made it. i personally like playing and auditioning electric guitars without plugging them to an amp at first and this one just cut and shined. clarity, articulation, sustain and loudness just dominated. now let’s plug this thing in and experience the sonic wonder. loaded with m’s this thing sings, screeches and screams tone, tone, tone and more tone. and that was all clean. now i plugged in my newly acquired mosferatu overdrive by alf hermida and it took its sonic prowess to a different dimension. as you fellow nammanites know the namm police is always on the prowel with their decibel-meters to put in namm jail those who push the sonic envelope within their designated space. that said, let’s push the atom and hear it explode, and explode it did. it was certainly worth the risk of spending the rest of our life in solitary confinement in namm jail.

tom & gang, what is next? what can possibly top the atom? maybe a future model called “the bomb.” congratulations!!! i tip my snow filled hat to you.

it was great seeing fellow forumites corey (guitarzan), mike, fuzzyguitars, enr1co & brian h. my apologies if i missed someone.

and for the “rachel fan club” i was slightly disappointed that more of you guys did not make it out for her special appearance at the anderson booth for most of the day on friday. but all you rachel followers and fans can make it up by sending her flowers or philly cheese steak sandwiches (inside joke) at headquarters. keep in mind that the prompt and timely delivery of your beloved andersons is in her hands.

thanks for listening.

peace.

I will try to post evryone's pictures on the server at lunch today (Wednesday). Thanks to all you took the time and trouble to post the pictures from the NAAM show. We East-Coasters, in particular, are grateful.

Suriel, great meeting you too! Funny, a few years ago, I bought one of those Daisy Rock guitars for my daughter and was hauling it around all Sunday afternoon. Needless to say that when tom, Roy, Laurie saw it, eyes were rolling and heads shaking! :p

michael, once my duaghter saw the pictures of the daisy rock guitars she totally fell in love with the guitar. needless to say, ups should be dropping one off anyday. :D
