After seeing the Atom and its snazzy new direct mounting for the full size buckers, the question has to be asked...

How long before the rest of the TAG line is converted over to this new mounting system? I think it gives the guitar a much more classy look and would be very surprised if TAG did not.

the pickup mounting was done to allow the pickups to be set parallel to the strings, since the neck is set at an angle. at this point i do not have plans to move atom features over to other models. the m's were originally slated to be for atom, but they got finished before the rest of the guitar. that's why they got the 3 point mount. be on the lookout for another m series mutation.

The new mounting seems to solve a few issues I have with the ring mounting system besides liking the cleaner look. My problem with the rings and full size humbuckers is stability. The pickup will tilt forward and back in the ring pretty easily with only two screws and some have produced some unwanted handling noise, kind of a knocking sound if I moved the guitar in certain ways. Every Cobra I have owned with full size buckers has ended up with foam under the pickups to stabilize them. The 3 screw mounting would definetly help eliminate the need for foam even if they were still in a ring.

Of course... I could always just buy an Atom. ;)

but what would people think without the plastic ring, and how would they mount their favorite non anderson pickup?

Maybe that would force them to actually listen to the pickups long enough to decide whether they like them or not.

could use 2 screws at the top of the ring and one at the bottom, like some of those old shallers.

BFC,

I understand what you experienced about the p/u being loose. This can be improved on if there are slightly longer pieces of rubber (p/u springs), installed over the adjustment screws... Some time ago, we noticed that some of the rubber wasn't cut quite long enough, which is probably what you are experiencing.

Those particular guitars are long gone now. I've been stuck on the M pickups in my Cobra S for a while now. Eventually I will get back into a full sized humbucker equipped guitar and thought those pictures of the Atom's full sized buckers looked promising. I might just end up with an Atom if I can try one or two first.

I use the foam inside the packing of Duncan pickups and put it under pickups - even humbuckers - to end the handling noise and get them to hold steady. Adds no weight to the guitar.

That is pretty much the same type of stuff I have used in the past. Works perfectly.
