That's not a sound I use, so keeping that in mind, I was recording a clip for a friend of mine recently who wanted to hear how heavy my Tonebone Classic could get through a clean Fender amp. I tuned my E down to D and did my best chugga-chugga riff. I was amazed at how heavy the Tonebone could get with the low control turned up and the gain on high. Way more than I'd ever use, and a lot like a Mesa Recto was hiding in my Super Reverb. I was using my Anderson Cobra S of course <g>.

Try the right side of the Jekyll & Hyde pedal.

There are quite a few good distortion pedals out there, but none that I've heard that can replicate an amp like an Uberschall for those brutal head cutting detuned riffs. The SIB Varidrive with a good 12AX7 and the mid eq scooped out can sound pretty good, but also can be too buzzy too. The Tonebone Hot British is great for that Marshall hot rodded tone and as Joe mentioned the Classic can get pretty nasty too. The Soldano GTO is full on raunchy but noisy as heck. Actually one of the better high gain distortion pedals I've heard of all things is that Line 6 DM4 or whatever its called (the modelling distortion/od/boost pedal). Some of the high gain models were suprisingly quite good but it also made all my guitars sound the same, so I ditched it in a hurry. Line6 now makes a stand alone distortion type pedal, but you would know more about that than me.

Personaly I like my FD II, but if I want really over the top I grab my T-Rex Mudhoney away from my son. Kick the boost in and crank the gain and you get some really mean chug a chug out of it.

The zvex Octane 3 was the wildest gain pedal I've ever owned.
Nick
you said "was". was it too wild, or just not your taste?

You're right, I said "was." I loved what the pedal did--lots of gain and an octave effect when using the neck pickup--but I had problems with RF I couldn't sort out, so I couldn't use it.

I haven't found a pedal that does the recto chugga chugga thing great, but for a while I used a sansamp tri-od on the british setting and it got a pretty close approximation of a hot rodded marshall, lots of low end beef and gain.
Also, Scott, I saw that you have a "Tim" pedal on your gear page. How do you like it? I know the guy in Nashville that makes 'em but haven't tried one yet.

Just noticed your rig on the website, Mike. Very nice! For years I had a '63 Bandmaster, kind of like yours (blonde), and used it as the "preamp" for my guitar rig I floundered on through the 1980s. I'd crank it up, use a PowerSoak on it, then run it through a Super Six Reverb head that'd power my cabinets. I've yet to find a comparable tone--and wished to God that I never do anything as stupid again as to trade something as cool as that Bandmaster!

The TIM pedal is a great boost/light od pedal. I was amazed how it kept the basic tone of the amp intact. I hear Paul is backlogged quite a bit these days building that pedal as it has become so popular.

Yeah, Paul is pretty busy building amps now, I believe for Heritage. He was working for Holland for a bit before that. He used to have a shop in a little local store in Nashville and I took all of my amp work to him. He's a good guy. I saw some of his earliest prototypes for the Tim in the store before they had any paint on them or anything. It's just cool to see his pedals show up in random places, kinda like "I knew him when..."

AHHHH, that's why he's busy thesedays. Good for him. My TIM pedal was one of those unpainted silver boxes with computer taped labels too! Is the pedal fancy looking these days?

Paul Cochrane makes a boost/light overdrive pedal called the TIM. If you go to the gearpage, you'll probably quite a few posts on it.
