View Full Version : Buzz Feiten, Strobostomps, and really being in tune...

Just did a complete set up on my Cobra S with new Snake Oil Rock Forumula strings. I used the Stobostomp to set the intonation dead on to the Feiten open string and 12th fret presets. I mean dead on the money, no bars moving. Took a while but well worth the effort...

The first thing I noticed was just how much difference checking the intonation in playing position really makes. I can't imagine how far off I would be with the guitar laid out on a bench using a needle or LED tuner. The second thing I noticed was how much difference touch can make when setting intonation at the 12th fret (pushing down on the string, not using the harmonic). With the tuner reading the 12th fret as flat, it was very easy to just push down harder and harder until it read in tune. I used my 'normal' touch to set it. The other thing that hit me was how important Bruce Nelson's suggestion is of starting flat and working your way up as far as adjusting the saddle for string length. I cranked the saddles way back to start and this made it way easier in the long run. This keeps the saddle from putting a little kink in the usable string length I guess. Makes sense. The last thing I noticed was how important it is to have the truss rod tweaked right. More relief makes the open string sit further away from the 12th fret. Duh! Should have thought about that before.

Finally, I could not believe how incredibly in tune and how much better the guitar sounded after being intonated properly to my string choice and my personal touch. I honestly hadn't heard just how good the Feiten System is until now. This guitar is unbelievably in tune and the final result is a much sweeter tone with far fewer 'rubs' in the sound coming out of my speakers. I'm a happy camper. :D

BFC,

Glad to hear you were able to get great results from doing it yourself. It's funny how a few "little" things add up to "big" results at the end of a fine-tuned setup.

One of the many benefits of having a great forum like this. Makes it way easier getting all of the little tips and tricks right here on the forum. I'm feeling pretty confident about doing my own set ups now except for a few little things. But hopefully I won't see the need to mess with that stuff.

Now if I could just get that screwdriver thing down for adjusting the truss rod on my Classic! :D Still can't get that one without fear of mangling the slot.

One thing I did figure out with this Cobra S though that will apply to all guitars soon since the newer ones with have the adjustment at the headstock... DO NOT let the allen wrench slip all the way down into the socket. Just get it in there enough to make the adjustment otherwise it is a serious wrestling match to get back out and there's a good chance of scratching the slot, especially if you have a pretty finished headstock face.

:D ;)

Hey BFC, congratulations on that accomplishment. I plan on getting some string saver saddles and will have to go through this myself. It is a bit nerveracking even thinking about it. Your post proves there is hope for other people to figure it out.
Gotta love those snake oils!! ;)

Biggest pointers were...

Start with the saddles way back and move them toward the pickups...

And take your time!!! Painfully slow otherwise you will overshoot and potentially kink the string in just the wrong place. Also, make a small move at the 12th and then retune the open string. Then check the 12th again. Then make a small move. Then retune the open string. Then check the 12th again...

:D

Pain in the butt. Well worth it though.
