Fingerboard Oil Suggestion

In converstions with a couple of high end builders I have been pointed to a great product for oiling rosewood fretboards. It has been long discussed about the good/bad points of using lemon oil on rosewood boards. Most of the bad centers around the solvents which are mixed with most lemon oils. Raw linseed oil has been ofered as an option, but its down side seems to be its "sticky" nature. Someone has finally pointed me to a product which is just pure oil for the fretboard without the solvents. In fact the builder who pointed me in this direction recommends using lemon oil to clean the rw board if it is gunky, followed up with a treatmeant of the fb oil. The product recommned is from Roche-Thomas and is simply called fingerboard oil. It is solvent free and does a great job! Great price too, about $4 for a 4 oz bottle!

Don't know if he's the builder you're referring to, Stan, but John Suhr recommends the same RW fingerboard care you described, just in case that constitutes one more vote of confidence.

The Roche-Thomas stuff works very well. A small bottle with last a long time. I've been on the same bottle for several years now.

Sure can make an African rosewood board look pretty.:)

a liitle jewler's rouge on the frets and you have a really pretty looking and sounding fingerboard. :D

Sorry to be a bit dumb, but what is jeweler's rouge? Is it like a rubbing compund to polish the frets?

stan, jewler's rouge is a metal polish used by jewler's. it comes in a bar like form, like a small piece of soap. luthiers use it to polish frets, they rub it on a cotton rag, then apply to the frets and buff. works really good. here in nyc i pick it up at the diamond district (w47th st) at the jewlers supply store. you can also get it on the internet. it comes in various colors, but the most practical is white. when i find the site i will post it. :cool:
